July 17th was going to be the day I started a new life

Recommended Posts

On July 17th I came to the day surgery center at one of our local hospitals for my Gastric Sleeve I was excited but nervous at the same time I was to be there at 8:30 am with a surgery time of 10:30 am at 6:05 am the phone rang It was the surgery center asking if I could come in early as there was a cancelation I jump in the shower wash everything but my hair and then off we went. I checked in they rushed me to a room set up my IV and then went to the holding area Mr. Anastasia comes in tells me he will be working with another doctor and what to expect then came my Dr. and off we went to the OR. in Recovery while waking up the anastasiologist told me that they had to abort the surgery as they ruptured my eshopogus while putting a boogie down the tube in my through but they did repair it along with a hernia now that today is Monday July 23rd and I'm still in the hospital I might get to go home on Wednesday but I will be on a feeding tube for 6 weeks along with a drainage bag for my stomach this is dependently not what I signed up for apparently it is very rare for them to do this so before you do your surgery please talk with your doctor about this as the next 6-8 weeks I'm not looking forward to

Oh my goodness. Im so sorry that happened to you. Im sure everyone thinks of the risks but rupturing your esophogus certainly wasnt one that I thought of. Hope you heal quickly and get past all this and onto your new life very soon with no further complications.

That is awful. Did they say why it happened? Was your surgeon training another surgeon or a fellow in the procedure? I hope that your surgeon talked with you about it and not just the anesthesiologist. Sending you positive, healing thoughts.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
