Does anyone else have a pre-surgery liquid diet? The liquid diet starts August 27th and I think I am more nervous about the 2 weeks of liquid than I am about the surgery!!!

I have a 2 week 800 calorie diet. I have to get at least 70 grams of Protein per day, so will probably do a mixture of shakes/protein bars

My surgery is scheduled Sept. 4th, in Houston, Texas, only 6 weeks from my first app't with the surgeon, Dexter Turnquest. Because I am self pay, I have not been required to jump through all the hoops that ins. companies require. I thought I had done plenty of research, but yesterday ran into a pretty negative article about potential side effects that made them sound common instead of unusual. Now I am getting a bit anxious for the first time. :-(

Hello, I'm self pay as well because its not covered by my insurance. Would you mind sharing some of what the article said? Thanks!

Many, many of the issues they mention here are related to RNY and bands, not VSG. By treating those all in one bucket, it's a huge disservice. Also forgive me but this is REALLY bad journalism. Correlation is passed off as causality, and no percentages are ever stated and its so badly done that really, you should do your own research.

Here's my suggestion. Take each of the side effects they detail and look up the incidence of that side effect with VSG, and then decide. You will find things like malnutrition, dumping, etc do not happen with VSG. As to the suicide rate, look up suicide rates amongst the obese as compared to normal weights first. I'm quite sure it's higher, with or without surgery.

When they say 20% complications, is dehydration because patients didn't follow drinking directions a complication? Funny, no definitions provided.

Aargh I will stop ranting. I am trained as a scientist and I deal with statistics daily, and that is a classic case of scare-mongering while failing to provide sufficient evidence.

Okay I'm off to take a deep cleansing breath now :)

LOL! Thanks! Just the sort of answer I hoped to see here. Really a lousy article wasn't it? Seemed to contradict much that my surgeon had said, as well as other things I had read. Now ... If people who have had the surgery (guess I will find them on other threads) will just assure me they did not develop fecal or urinary incontinence . . . And that they are all glad they did this and do not regret it ... I will be happy.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
