very promising first fast day on the 5:2 plan

Recommended Posts

I lost 1.6 pounds following my first fast day on the 5:2 plan! At nearly 6 months post-op, and as a notoriously slow loser with hypothyroidism, the most weight I have lost overnight since week 3 has been 4/10 of a pound. And I definitely don't lose every day. So this is quadruple a typical loss! I am trying not to get ahead of myself but am very excited that I've found something that my body is responding to. I couldn't believe it when I saw the scale this morning! I know this might not sound like a lot to some of the faster losers, but for a slow loser, it's a LOT.

My RD was very supportive of trying this plan as she is a firm believer in shaking up calories and carbs/protein from day to day so that the body does not go into homeostatis. Will post about how the rest of the week is going. My next fast day will be Thursday. I did 501 calories yesterday and felt fine. I am planning to eat 800-900 calories today ("feast"/normal eating day) and will be going to the gym to bike and do core strengthening Water aerobics.

If I could lose even 3 pounds a week consistently, I would be over the moon.

Interested to hear eveyone else's experience.

For those of us that aren't familiar with that plan, how's it work?

Basically it's a way to prevent your body from going into homeostasis (and creating a caloric deficit) by having 2 days a week when you eat fewer calories than the rest. For women it's generally 500 cals on the "fast" days and 600 calories/day for men. On the other days, you eat normally. For me that will be about 800-950 calories. I am aiming for 50-60 g of Protein on the fast days and 60-80 g on the higher calorie days.

There's another thread I started about it here with some links to very helpful info on the WWW:

Also, there's a group on this forum focused on 5:2 but it's a closed group--so you can see the posts but can't post to the group:

I've been on it for over 2 weeks and I was over the moon when I first started losing. Now I just gain back what I lose on fast days and I am getting discouraged.

I am eating around 1000 calories on non fast days.

It makes me think ai need to eat 500 every day.

Sorry to hear that, OregonDaisy. Do you think it could be because you are so close to goal? I know losing can crawl to a snail's pace at that point, no matter what you do. Or didn't you just have a major injury? That can cause inflammation and Fluid retention but hopefully just temporary. Hope you feel better soon, and heartfelt congratulations on your impressive accomplishments to date. P.S.--I have actually heard of people doing the fasting 3 days a week or essentially every other day....

Yes, I was at goal and I am fighting regain. Every other day of fasting makes a whole lot more sense with my body.

Yeah, I broke my wrist playing in the river on Sunday. I'll see the dr. tomorrow. I'll be glad to get that over with.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
