Warning: If you take Reglan...

Recommended Posts

Last nite I ended up in the ER. My facial muscles, back, neck, and hands wouldn't relax, they were constantly contracting. It was so scary. My bp was 170/111. I calle dmy nurse in fear I had a leak. My should was killing me. She said it's probably not a leak, as they tend to happen within the first few days and my temp was only 98.1. About an hour after talking with her, hubby said we were going to the ER. On the ride over there, I knew i was having a stroke or something. Felt like I was gunna explode. It was weird. As soon as I got there, an orderly met me outside with a wheelchair. I was checked in immediately. As soon as my husband told them my symptoms, the dr asked me if I was taking Compazine or Reglan for nausea. Yes, I was tkaing Reglan, not for nausea, but to keep my stomach "moving". He had seen this many times before with Reglan. As soon as the nurse put the medication in my IV to counteract it, I immediately felt better. Had s stomach xray just to be sure I had no leak. I was sent home within 2 hrs, feeling 100% better.

So warning. If you're taking Reglan as part of your post op meds ( I was sposed to take it 3x a day for 7 days following surgery) this can happen. I guess it happens with certain meds, not just Reglan. It's definitely on my allergy list now

Feeling so much better today. Still in pain (more than I thought I'd be 6 days out) but I'm healing nicely. Scared to even eat Jello, needless to say I've been sticking to Water, Protein Shakes and Tomato Soup.< /p>

They're probably extrapyramidal symptoms. They probably gave you Benadryl to counteract. You can google to get more info. Just curious if you are on any other meds. Reglan tends to increase the effects of certain meds.

They said I had a "Dystonic Reaction". Yes, I was also put on Pepcid, Zofran (I've only taken once), liquid Vicodin, and my regular pills that I've taken for years (Lisinopril, Gabapentin, Pentazocine, and Synthroid

I will google it. Wish I would've thought about that before it happened. I guess I coudn't have tho, right? Silly me.... And the only med I'm allergic to is statins (gave me Rhabdomyalosis). And yes, it was benadryl they put in my iv.

Thanks for the info

Sounds like the beginning of or an atypical presentation of neuroleptic malignant syndrome was a possibililty as well. Really glad you went to the ER without delay.

edit - just saw your response about dystonia. Dystonia can be one of the components of NMS. So glad you did not play around

Thanks for the warning. Hope you are feeling better. Sounds scary but glad you went to the ED and they figured out what it was and treated you appropriately.

You think this is what has been causing you all the pain you have been writing about over the past few days?

I doubt it. Thats not a symptom. I asked my nurse yesterday why I was still having lotso pain. She explained to me that the dr took 30 minutes to dig my band out of my stomach (it was embedded) and thats probly why I was having persistent pain.

I'm feeling much better today. Not up to running on the treadmill or anything, but I'm playing poker tonite with our poker league

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
