Learned the hard way: The importance of liquids, protein and vitamins

Recommended Posts

I've been trying my hardest to get in my required amount of Protein and liquids each day, but lately it's been either or, and I'm out of town so my routine is really out of sorts. I also forgot to take my Vitamins the last couple days which all combined really made my body upset.

Long story short, early Sunday morning I got up to take some medication for my foot that I pulled a muscle in. Once I got to the bathroom I began to feel nauseous and I thought I was going to vomit. In my head I wasn't sure why, maybe it was something I ate the night before, I didn't know. I sat down on the toilet to wait it out when I all of a sudden felt very flushed and hot. The next thing I know I am waking up on the floor after passing out and hitting my head on the tile floor. I had to go to the ER to get a drip. The doctor believed it was a combination of dehydration, and a lack of nutrients/protein from eating less and possibly low Iron. He said my body is still probably catching up to my new way of life post surgery.

I learned the hard (and painful) way of the importance of getting BOTH enough liquids and protein, and not to skip your vitamins!

I'm glad you are ok! I've also learned the hard way. I'm 6 months out too and wasn't taking my Vitamins for a while... I started having some problems too that went away a few days after starting back on my vitamins. They are important. I've increased my Protein too.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
