What foods can you eat?

Recommended Posts

I am a band to sleeve patient and had a lot of issues with my band. I basically had to live on Soups for 3 years because solid foods would get stuck and come right back up. I'm just wondering if I will be able to eat "normally" once I've started my "food for life" stage? How many of you can eat a couple bites of pizza, burritos, turkey burgers, steak, ribs, even a little Pasta or maybe even a bite or two of a dessert around the holiday's? I guess I've gone so long without real foods that I just want to be able to have a small couple bites of the foods I loved. Please no negative comments as I have suffered on soups for 3 very long years. Any feedback would be great, I just want to know what most people can or can't eat. :) Thank you!

I do not plan to diet for life. This is a lifestyle change. So, I plan on having what I like..wiyhin reason...in moderation. Will I ever eat pizza again...yes. I can't say I won't. Will I eat a while slice..most likely not. Will I hqve cake for my bday...yes...but not a slab! I didn't do this to give up everything I enjoy. I plan to use it as a tool to help me. Don't get me wrong..I never plan on eating those items daily. Just on special occasions!

You still have to have some self control because some foods are sliders and you can eat large quantities still.. Think chips or cake, junk food.

I had my LapBand out in March and was sleeved 6 weeks ago. On doctor's orders, I'm now able to eat anything I want - and the restriction is incredible!! I do not regurgitate every solid food I consume (the only thing that's come up is Vitamins, and I quickly switched brands). I have tried small portions of the foods I had severe issues with (bread, lettuce, etc.) and can handle them like a champ! The restriction I have now is EXACTLY what I wanted in the first place...you'll love your new life!

JoiaRox, thank you!! It sounds like you had issues like me. Vomiting after every solid food meal is not fun and I suffered for 3 very long years! I think I miss salads and Chinese food the most so thank you for letting me know about salads because that was one thing I forgot to ask ;) I'm only a week out from surgery and still have a week to go on liquids before i start my 1 week of puree. I'm looking forward to having that "normal" eating experience again!!!

I hear ya - I suffered for over 2 years myself! "Soft food syndrome" led me to regain a lot of what I had originally lost, as I convinced myself that I "needed the food." I am LOVING this new life!

I can handle a few bites of spaghetti...chewed really well! Also, search the internet for substitutes for your favorite spaghetti dishes. You may find you enjoy other ways to have "pasta!"

Also, read the veteran's page... There may be some things that you CAN eat that you choose NOT to eat... Having a CAKE party at work this AM, and I'll go, but "no thanks" to the cake for me.

Five years with my lap band/ torture device. You are going to love the sleeve! No more throwing up all the time or constant hunger. At this point I could eat whatever I want but I follow the rule of Protein first and generally whatever I thought I wanted after that I really don't want anymore. I know for me with my band I learned to exist on slider foods so I have to be really careful. But eating the good stuff that I missed like fruit is amazing!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
