Vitamins

Recommended Posts

All of my Vitamins are either chewable, sublingual or smaller than a pencil eraser. My Dr. told me to not take a pill unless it was the size of a pencil eraser or smaller.

Celebrate makes really good chewable vitamins.

Wellesse makes the liquid form and they are approved for bariatric use.

Both of these companies will send you a free sample if you request it. I have difficulties swallowing big pills anyway. Just afraid after surgery it will be worse.

I think I'm a rare one who can take regular sized Vitamins. But I don't take them with liquid. I chew a small amount of food and when ready to swallow, pop in a Vitamin and swallow together. I take 1 multi vitamin, 1 B-Complex, and 2 Calcium. I usually eat a bite or two between the bites with supplements. Just a side note, but apparently B vitamins are absorbed in the stomach. With the sleeve we have a reduced ability to absorb them. I noticed Hair loss and did a bit of research. If I take it on a daily basis I'm fine... but forgetting it for a week and it takes a couple of weeks or more of daily usage to stop the hair loss. If your diet is rich in vitamin B foods you may not experience any issues.

I take Centrum chewable multi vitiman, B12 sublingual from costco, b1 (tiny pill) and calcium chews costco brand. In the beginning any form of multi vitiman made me nauseated. For some reason at six months post op that changed.

As bizarre as this sounds.... I could not tolerate plain Water either. It just felt like a lead wieght as I drank it. I had to flavor it with something. Once again at the sixth month that changed as well. Now I can drink plain Water fine. Anyway...sorry I got sidetracked lol!

Honestly, I would buy small bottles of different Vitimans and try them out. You will eventually find what works for you. For me this was the most difficult part of my experience. Once I was able to get that down I am good to go!

Best Wishes Tina

I actually forgot about this... but early on the only thing I could tolerate was liquid vitamins. I used highly concentrated infant Vitamins. I figured out how much I had to take based on adult vitamins. I think it was less than a tsp. I had to take that with food. That was also less expensive than some of the designer vitamins out there. :)

My nutritionist recommended two flintstone chewables with Iron. I take them at lunch because you can't take Iron and Calcium together. So calcium is at Breakfast and dinner.

Also be careful the kind of calcium. Most chewable calcium is calcium carbonate which requires more stomach acid to metabolize. My nutritionist recommends calcium citrate instead.

So why can't you take iron and calcium together. I too take Flinestones Vitamins and Calcium Caltrate. Both of these were on the list my Dr. told me to get but I was not told to not take them together. Just curious!

You should not take Calcium and Iron supplements together, because mixing the minerals may reduce the absorption of iron from your intestines.

Right. Iron and Calcium are absorbed in a similar way. So if you take them at the same time, calcium interferes with the absorption of iron.

So why was this not something important to tell me? I had no idea. I will fix this tomorrow. This would not have anything to do with a stall that I hit about 2 weeks ago at 3 weeks pre-op? I have not lost a pound in 2 weeks and I am getting frustrated.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
