Getting sleeved 8/16, what do I need?

Recommended Posts

I have seen the thread on what I should bring to the hospital, but I mean what do I need for afterwards? I have a 24 oz cool cup that I already take everywhere with me, but it does have a straw (it is sippable w/o a straw on the other side of the lid) how long did you adhere to the no straw rule? What do I need to have at home to be comfortable after the surgery? I am on liquids for 10 days post op. What did you keep in your house to eat? What were your favorite meals? I want to get my grocery list together now. What type of exercise did you do when you came home. Any plans/dvds, elliptical? recumbent bike? treadmill? what was too much? what wasnt enough? Do you recommend chewable vitamins (I hate all medicine that is not in pill form) if so what kind did you have that didnt make you puke? I have a really hard time with pain meds in that they pretty much all make me very nauseous and this is something I am very worried about as I know first hand vomiting after surgery is no fun. Do you know where I can get samples of Protein Shakes that have all the nutrients we need right after surgery? I saw samples on here once but I also heard you need to be careful they have enough Vitamins and Proteins in the beginning so I want to make sure I am following those guidelines. What was your most comfortable outfit? Could you wear sweatpants? Should I just plan on maxi dresses because of the incisions? When did you go back to work? This is the biggest one for me. I am self employed and just cant see not working for a month I do no heavy lifting, Im a lawyer so at most I walk to court, and sit down, I will get up briefly for my cases, and walk back to the office. I have appearances within 3 days of my surgery, but I will just be walking, sitting, and standing for a max of 30 minutes per day including the walk to and from. After the appearances I can go home if I need to and work from the bed (if at all) or I can sit in my office and do paperwork/make calls, think that will be a problem? What didnt I ask that you think I need to know?

You can not drink out of a straw for 2 to 6 weeks because it will cause gas and believe me you will have enough of that after surgery. After the surgery you are going to need a lot of liquid such as Soup broth, Jello, ice pops ( all of these goodies should be sugar free) unless u are allergic of course. I keep a lot of fruit so i do not revert to old habits, also almonds are awesome. These treats are for after your diets is done. Strictly walking for the first 6 weeks. Do not attempt any other exercise because your body is very week and keep hydrated.. From personal experience is very easy to dehydrate. I was in the hospital for 5 days because I was so dehydrated but I also had a stomach bug. For the Vitamins get them in the metalling because it goes in to your system and yes get chewable much easier. BJ or costcos have this really good shake that is awesome for u. i will get back to you on the name. Sorry slipping my mind. Sweatpants are the best or short like with a stretchy band . It all depends where your incision are placed. sometimes u can even wear jean and be comfortable and for work u should fine. just a lot of gas and some soreness. if you have any other questions send me an email at Cam5992@aol.com

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
