Help! Need to lose 4 lbs before my surgery!

Recommended Posts

My doctor has sent the request to insurance for authorization for my surgery! I had to do a 6 months medically supervised diet (and couldn't lose more than 10% of my weight or I wouldn't qualify...so I did not push myself to really lose.) My doctor wanted me to lose 13 lbs before my surgery and I have lost 9 lbs as of today. I had lost 11 lbs, but I gained 2 lbs back. Normally, I can drop 10 lbs fairly easy, and steadily lose 1 lb per week up until 30 lbs and that has always been my plateau that I could never get past. So, I thought 13 lbs pre-surgery would be no big deal...but for some reason I am not dropping it as fast as I once could. If I don't lose the extra 4 lbs, they will put me on a 2 week liquid diet before surgery, which wouldn't be such a big deal except that I apparently have to purchase the diet products from them at about $160.00!! I can't afford that so I really need to lose this on my own. I am not sure how much time I have as we are just waiting on the insurance company to approve and then will schedule the doctor appt.

Do you have any good ideas for me to lost 5 - 10 lbs in the next 2 weeks? I have been eating a low calorie diet, not eating after 6:00 p.m. and trying to drink more Water. I do notice if I drink more water I lose more (and keep it off.) I've read where some people go to a Protein Drink diet for 1 - 2 weeks. I am looking for advice from those who have done this and what diet helped you to drop those last few lbs before your surgery?

Thanks! Oh and please keep your fingers crossed that my insurance approves!!

Go with the nectar Protein powder!! You can get it off Amazon for $32 . A lot of sleevers use this and have success with it plus you can use it after surgery since you only have to use Water and all the favors they have supposedly amazing. I'm going to be ordering some soon :)

My doctor always recommends low carb as a way to drop weight quickly (not long term) - go for no more than 50g/day and that should do the trick! Incidentally, that was my pre-op diet...I lost 10 pounds in 10 days.

You could do Atkins induction, which is mostly Protein, tons of Water, and no more than 20 g of carbs a day. I am certain you will lose 4 lbs and then some if you do it....and it's still regular food. You will be rocking the liquid diet after the surgery, so if your surgeon doesn't require that, you might as well do something with a high success rate that allows you to eat. Just google Atkins induction sample menu and plenty will come up. You will feel crappy for a couple of days (good to start on a weekend if you can) but it will pass.

Okay so this is going to sound bad but I just couldn't lose the last couple of pounds right before the surgery and I was so stressed about it. It was awful, I was terrified that those last 2-3 pounds were gonna stand in the way between me and my surgery. So the night before my husband wrapped me in plastic and trash bags all over and I put on sweats. I slept this way all night without air conditioning and the next morning before my pre-op appointment I did I workout too. I also didn't drink anything till after I saw my doc. It was a miserable experience but I dropped the last 2 pounds and the surgery went just fine the next day. I know they tell you to diet to shrink your liver and I totally get that but I seriously doubt 2 pounds really make that much of a difference if you have already lost most of the weight you were told to

It's so interesting how everyone's journey is different. I wasn't required to lose any weight before. I would have probably done the same thing if I was in your shoes! Good luck

My insurance requires a certain percentage of weight loss before they will authorize my surgery. I am currently trying to lose weight for a weigh in at the doc's office in a couple of weeks so I feel your pain. The minute I decided I would lose the weight within 4 weeks, I started having extra stress at work, knee issues, and sugar cravings. It's so frustrating, but I'm ready to do crazy things to lose the weight. :) Good luck, I'm sure you will do it!

Just wanted to follow up and let you know that when I went for my pre op appt, I had lost 17 lbs (required to lose 13 lbs)! I went on a 2 day liquid only diet and exercised 30 minutes every day for almost a week before the appt.

I had my surgery on August 27th so I am just 6 days post op and have lost 7 lbs since my surgery! I love this forum...everyone is so helpful!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
