Has anyone had a conversion from sleeve to gastric by pass ?

Recommended Posts

I'm 5 weeks out post op sleeve and from the very beginning I was very nauseas. My surgeon gave me Zofran and said it will take a little bit of time. I had to get use to my new stomach. Well 4 trips later to the ER with dehydration. And still nauseous they had to hospitalize me. I've been here 8 days and they had to give me everything through IV fluids including my Protein. The only thing that helps my nausea is Phenegran by injection the pill form doesn't work for me. Im so miserable and unhappy with the sleeve. The sad thing is you dont know how your body will take it until you e had it done. I research this sleeve for two years before i decided to do it. Sadly I was not a good canditate for the sleeve. I'm now scheduled for gastric by pass for Monday. I would like some feedback and or words of encouragement in these difficult times for me.

I'm so sorry. I'm only 5 days post op, experiencing what I think is abnormally high pain. Can't imagine being nauseous for that long. I only had to take Zofran twice, once in the recovery room and once right after my swallow test. Haven't even touched the script I got.

But I'm not understanding how doing a bypass on you is gunna help. Can you explain? From my understanding, they connect your intestines right to you esophagus, bypassing the stomach. Why would that make it any better for you?

Again, I'm so sorry to hear of your complications. So, so glad I don't have that on top of the pain...

So sorry to hear about the hard time you're having. Don't know why they want to do the bypass, but I hope it's a success for you.

I'm sooo sorry you are going through this. But I think that you should be very cautious about your next step and I'm not sure that I would jump right into another surgery especially only 5 weeks post op. Can you get a 2nd opinion from another bariatric surgeon and/or a gastroenterologist? GBP comes with malabsorptive issues and it's even easier to get dehydrated--and your body is still healing from the first surgery.

Sending you healing thoughts.

Are they doing the revision because of Acid reflux? I saw in some of your other post you were having that also. I know they will revise the sleeve to a RNY for severe acid reflux but I don't know about your other issues. I would think you would have the same issues with the bypass. If all o your issues are being caused by reflux then I understand that. Just curious.

Sending prayers and good vibes your way!!!!

Thank you all for the get well wishes. I have had nausea since my sleeve June 10th and I'm dehydrated with low blood pressure. My surgeon said that with the sleeve you still have a biliary duct and he believes that is what's causing the nausea and dehydration. I'm so scared for the gastric by pass but he said when he makes the pouch the nausea will instantly go away. I don't have much of a life right now and he said If I hold off another couple of weeks and maybe the nausea will go away. But it's not a guarantee. From all of my research on the sleeve I had never heard of sleeve revision to gastric by pass. My husband was here with me all day at the hospital I couldn't help but cry when he left . I feel horrible, scared and sadden by all that is happening to me. I have to try to stay positive. I just find it hard to do so. So help me God.

Just take it one day at a time sweetie. It's gonna get better. You will be fine if they revise your sleeve to bypass. And you may be ok after some time with your sleeve. You just have to decide what's best for you. I know it's hard to make any kind of decision when your so sick. When hubby comes back make him curl up with you. That always makes me feel better. You will be in my thoughts and prayers!!!!

May I ask what kind of problems you are having? I've had my concerns about having it because I have bad acid reflux, I take 2 40mg Nexium a day. I just want to make sure that I'm getting the right surgery.

I never had acid reflux before the surgery. I'm not sure if my stomach may need more time to heal but I never imagined me having problems of such nature. Dehydration comes along with severe headaches Constipation nausea and low blood pressure. I was healthy before the surgery except my overweight problem. Now I feel so sad and depressed I have multiple test done to see if they can find the root of the problem but nothing yet. And they have me on a stand by surgery schedule for gastric bypass not what I ever wanted for myself.

I just keep thinking you need more time to process this massive turn of events. If you want it, you could tell your doctors you need time to think. But then if you have a blazing headache, I'll bet thinking is easier said than done.

My surgeon is among the most experienced in the country and is highly regarded in this field. I have particular preexisting conditions and concerns. Severe reflux and nausea are among them. Before i had my surgery i asked my dr what would be done if i were to prove to be a bad candidate, have even more reflux or nausea. I didn't want to live that way. He told me that we would do the GBypass if that were the case. Sleeve to bypass is not unheard of or even rare.it is done for many different reasons. Of course a second opinion is always a good idea but if you know that you have a highly qualified and experienced surgeon I would trust him to help me.

I'm definitely asking for a second opinion I was reading on line last night that it could be that I have a thiamine deficiency or to have my B12, Iron and Vitamin D levels checked and to ask to see a gastroenterologist which I will be doing today. I want to make sure I'm cleared on everything before I jump into another serious surgery. Also I have had an upper GI to see if there was narrowing on my sleeve but everything looked good. I had an endonoscopy and I had a stomach tissue biopsy to have checked for gastritis because the doctor who didi it said he saw some redness and gastritis has almost all the same symptoms as dehydration and I was hoping it was so that I could be treated for it but the pathology report was negative. It's so frustrating. I can't even sip on Water without it making me sick. I haven't had any sort of food since before I was hospitalized 9 days ago. I'm so sad. I never imagine this would turn into a nightmare for me.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
