My appetite has not decreased?

Recommended Posts

I am four days post op, and I count the minutes until I get my next 4 oz of Protein Shake or 1/4 cup of broth or sugar free Jello. My nutritionist said I should take 20 minutes to finish these "meals". I am able to inhale the 4 oz without any pain or problem in about 2 seconds. I am totally starving and have zero energy. I ready other posts about people not being able to finish their 1/4 cups of broth etc after surgery. I am wondering if my doctor really did anything to my stomach?

Don't worry. Is just because you're on liquids. once you start solids you will feel it.

I felt that same way at that time. It did get better. But, I am much hungier than I thought I was going to be. They kept telling me I wasn't going to feel hungry. But, I get REALLY hungry and have to eat to be OK. I never experienced hunger like this pre-surgery. Maybe because I fed my stomach so much.

Not everyone struggles with fluids. Some people do not have as much post-op swelling and they can fluids down easier. It doesn't mean you won't have restriction when you start solid foods.

And not everyone loses their hunger. Are you on a PPI, such as Prilosec? If not, you may have excess stomach acid which makes you feel hungry. Ask your Dr. about a PPI if you are not taking one. If you are taking a PPI, you may need a different one. Some people are stuck with the hungry feeling, but most report it is better when you can eat solids.

I agree. When I forget to take my ppi I am ravenous. That's what reminds me. I do get slightly hungry at meal times now two months out but generally other hunger feelings are just acid.

You're on clears - of course you feel hungry. It's pretty common, actually, and persists until you're on solid foods and chewing again.

Four days out you still have ghrelin in your system, you're probably still making too much acid even if you're on a PPI (can take 10 days to really take full effect) and you're used to eating...but now you're on a clear diet.

It's normal and will pass.

And everyone is different. Some people immediately on solids could eat what I was still struggling to eat a year out. We're all different.

The sleeve verses the by-pass is that your stomach is still secreting acid and will still help break down your food so that you get more value out of what you eat......

Some of the hunger feelings are probably in your head....I was sure I was going to slowly and steadily die with eating so little or drinking so little at first....And I always felt hungry....I could only go by what I ate before...

Now almost 10 months out I do feel hungry before a meal.....but am satisfied with what I eat.....

You will get there too....Have patients..I know I had to learn some....LOL

I was the same way so my doctor told me to go ahead and have cream Soup, pudding etc. that helped a lot and I was able to tolerate the whole can of Soup with no prob. Then the following week he had me add cottage cheese, string cheese and yogurt. I have had zero trouble with anything and am 8 weeks out now. Some can just move forward and tolerate more than others. Feel blessed that you are doing so well :)

Congrats!!!!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
