Hi I'm 12 days out.had some complications and had to go back in hospital. I have been home a few days but still can not get out of bed or my recliner by myself. Pain is easing up some bit still bad enough. I can't hardly drink a cup of liquid a day. How are you guys making it. Most of you sound like your doing wonderful what do I need to do?

Your job while you're recovering is to make sure you're drinking Water constantly. If you're not drinking Water, you're working on a Protein shake. a sip every 5 minutes (not joking here) until you're able to get more and more water in per hour.

Are you on pain meds? There is no reason to suffer needlessly.

Yea I still have pain meds, have cut back some. My moms been here by my side and pushing fluids, it's just do hard to drink. In the hospital they wouldn't let me have anything but ice chips for 3 days( second time in). I know I need it. I'm trying. I know it will get better.

You will end up in the hospital again if you don't get more Water in! A cup a day is not going to make it :(

Try using a pitcher to hold your liquids for the day and fill a shot glass ( around an ounce or so) and drink it every 15 minutes and so on through the day.

And take the pain meds, I was in pain the first week and and not ashamed to say I took my meds :)

Agree with Laura about the shot glass. Set a clock by your chair or bedside. Aim for one ounce every 15 minutes while you are awake - either Water or your Protein drink of choice. I used a 1 cup measuring cup like a little pitcher to keep refilling the shot glass. It was a lot easier for me to drink when I broke it down like that instead of facing a big glass of Water.

I took my pain meds for almost two weeks and I didn't have any complications.

It will get better.

Wow Im sorry to hear your having such a hard time , but it sounds like you have some really good advice , and its all true. It will get better one day at a time, slow and easy wins the race. Take those meds I used all mine I took them at bed time i sleep on my side it just made it easier for me to navigate in bed. Good luck to you I hope you feel better soon.

1. Stay hydrated - Sip, sip, sip!

2. Move as tolerated - ambulation helps your circulation, which helps healing

3. Rest when you feel tired - good sleep is essential for recovery. The first couple weeks I took a 2-3 hour nap every single day and it helped me a lot.

4. Pack what you eat with Proteins - pick liquid Proteins that you can get down with your sipping. The better nutrition you get in, the better/faster you will heal.

5. Treat your pain. If you know you're going for a walk in a half hour, take your pain meds or some tylenol so that you are not doubling over in pain or unable to make progress in your walking. Short periods of walking more often is really helpful. I used to do laps around the backyard when I didn't feel up to going out in the neighborhood.

It gets better!! Hang in there =)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
