Question about Post Op ADHD meds

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!

Fairly new to this forum-

I'm hoping that someone can anyone share their experience with Adderall xr after sleeve surgery?

I've been on Adderall XR for eight years now and will be having the sleeve surgery next month.

Along with helping my attention, adderall has a powerful appetite suppressant.

On days I don't take adderall,i have low energy and I eat a TON

After sleeve surgery, i was thinking about not taking my adderall and see how I can handle it.

I figure that during that time- i'll have low energy to begin with and also will be restricted to how much i can eat. the post surgery diet will help me build the right habits and routine so when I'm done- i'll be able to eat "normally" and not need adderall to suppress my appetite.

Also- post surgery i'll visit my psy to get another ADD med- but something different than Adderall. I guess my question is- has anyone tried this post surgery and how did you deal with the lack of appetite suppressing without the adderall?

thx!

I have taken Adderall in the past & while it does help most with suppressing their appetite, it will not help you with your ADHD/ADD if you don't take it. Your hunger will be surpressed from the surgery, so if you were taking Adderall only for that reason (doesn't sound like it tho), then you won't need it anymore. There are non stimulant meds you can take for your ADHD/ADD tho after if that's all you want to use your meds for.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure if what I wrote just made any sense. You'll have to excuse me as I'm on meds for my incision pain since I was just sleeved about 48 hours ago. I hope it made sense! Good luck to you!

Thanks Pixie Dust! Congrats on your new sleeve!!! How are you feeling?

Yes it makes complete sense- I take adderall for Adhd and of course it has the added benefit of suppressed appetite. Since the surgery will suppress my hunger, i think it'd be smart to talk to my psy to see if we should move into a non stimulant post surgery. Are you taking something different post op?

I am on Adderall, and my surgeon said to stay on the same dose I was on prior to surgery, which is 60mg/day. I would question if you are only taking Adderall XR as an appetite suppressant. If you have ADHD, the surgery does not address those issues, therefore your need for meds is still necessitated.

My son takes both Ritalin and Concerta for ADD and both of those suppress appetite.

I have NO appetite post op, and doubt it can be further suppressed by meds - you'll have to schedule your eating anyway (or you'll forget to eat), so it will make no difference. Relax about it.

I would also like to add that you need your psychiatrists help in stopping that type of medication. You need a professional to help you stop taking that type of medication. Plus, as someone said above, your surgery does not help or address your ADHD concerns. I would call your prescribing doc and talk to them. Good luck!

I'm on adderall and have been since the year before surgery. I was told to stay on the same dose and then address concerns after recovery if I needed. I have no appetite post op, with or without adderall, so that doesn't really effect my dosing or med choice at this point. However, one of the side effects is increased dehydration risk and that's been the only issue for me. Struggling to stay hydrated has been a little bit more of a struggle on my medication, but after trying to reduce the dose I found that I definitely still need the same dose post op. Best of luck!!

Thanks so much guys! I'll definitely talk to my doc about it. I was just concerned on how big the impact on appetite would be. I didn't consider scheduling my eating but that makes sense.

Also- great point about dehydration- I get dry mouth as it is, so that's something i'll need to be more aware of post surgery.

I have adult add and I was on 30mg adderall extended release and a 10mg of adderall in the afternoon. My dr said you can never take a extended release pill again? So he put me on regular adderall 10mg 3 times a day. It stinks because I have no energy as I am 13 days post op. so the adderall is too low a dose I will need to up it. But it does it job for the most part. I do miss the extended release but I will get through it!

Good luck with your surgery and I hope you get the meds worked out!!

Ashly

I had sleeve surgery 5 months ago and just started taking adderall two days ago. I was diagnosed with ADD years ago and have been on stratera and concerta in the past. But I forgot to take it all the time and self medicated with coffee. When I went off coffee for surgery back in Feb. it was so hard and gave me such intense headaches, that I don't want to go back. But my ADD was out of control, so I talked to my doc and started adderall twice a day 10mg. I have notice a little more acid, but I have to make myself get my Protein in.

I take 3 salmon oil a day to treat bad ADHD.

I would recommend speaking to your doctor - but if you do a trial off the prescription maybe take the fish oil to see if it could help you with the ADHD.

I don't suffer from my ADHD, but my family does, lol. my life is much more manageable when I treat it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
