Revising from Sleeve to Bypass...

Recommended Posts

Hi Riego, I'm in Miami too. Who was ur surgeon?

I'm only 11 days out, but Jacobs was mine. Very happy, healing well.

Dr Jorge Sosa. Also very happy but wish I had more restriction.

I am really going to look into that. I need a way to tackle this in my brain and not just my stomach.

It really can be difficult. I am like Laura, I have a lot of issues around food and will eat until sick, even now, after going through surgery. I have had to set up my environment for success. I cannot keep any trigger foods in the house or I will eat them. I have been for counseling as well, and it does really help. I am lucky, I live in Canada where I can access services that are covered under health care. I am glad that you have insurance now that you have the options to really take care of yourself! Good for you for taking the opportunities to do what you can for yourself!

Any kind of weight loss surgery is a tool. You cannot rely on the surgery alone. I know several bypass patients that have gained all the weight they lost plus some. I had the sleeve almost two years ago and I still struggle to make the right choices. I started this journey at a size 24 and am holding at a size 10. I can definitely eat more now than fresh out of surgery, but I keep my calorie intake down, as my hunger is mostly head and boredom. It is a daily struggle, but I did not have the surgery just to lose weight for a little while. You have to change your lifestyle habits in order to be successful at any weight loss surgery. It is a tool not a miracle worker. Good luck.

I'm with you, although I haven't started purée yet I am worried I won't be restricted enough. Head hunger shows up,at weird times.

Tomorrow I will try an egg and see what happens, wish me luck.

PS know any good disordered eating therapists in Miami, I have a feeling I will need to check in with someone.

If you still have restriction, I would try sticking to a low carb diet first. I saw this mentioned on another forum. May be worth a try if you are not losing weight right now.:

Calories: no more than 800 cals every day your first year ....or.... until you reach GOAL

DAILY Macronutrients: Protein ..90 grams

carbs ...first year....less than 40 gs TOTAL (never NET)

1year+ out ...never more than 60gs TOTAL for LIFE

fats..... never more than 30 grams for LIFE!

DAILY Measured food amounts:

NEVER ..eat more than 4oz of food , no matter the type........ at any meal.... FOR LIFE.

A couple noteworthy Ten Commandments:

Thou shall not eat more than 3 meals per day and shall not have unhealthy Snacks between meals.

Thou shall exercise 5 times per week for 40-45 minutes.

Thou shall ONLY weigh yourself once per week

Thou shall not covet the carbohydrate.

I know someone who had the bypass and another who had the DS. They both eat around their new stomachs.

I don't think the numbers actually add up. Protein and carbs are each 4 calories a gram and fat is 9. Plus 90 grams protein with only three 4-ounce meals will be almost impossible.

Also the carbs net vs total is weird. You are being penalized for eating Fiber?

Joined this group , attending my support group and going to see my surgeon soon. I am praying to reverse my bad habits ... BUT not giving up! Hang in there!

There is no doubt in my mind that I have a food addiction. food does have a power over me still - although it IS better than before my sleeve. I do not see a therapist but I am certainly open to the idea. Now that I have some insurance I can finally take care of myself.

While I have not had my sleeve yet, I do have to say this is where I would start before a revision....changing the type of tool isn't going to fix the drive to eat out of head hunger. I know in advance that a big part of my problem will be mental, and I have started with a new therapist to help me with those issues. Good luck with your decision

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
