Goal Weight Decision

Recommended Posts

In speaking with my Dr I could possibly be at goal at about 175 lbs. I on the other hand would like to get down to 150 lbs. (probably because I'm familiar with myself at that size). I'm having a hard time trying to figure out which should be my goal weight. How did everyone determine theirs?

As an FYI, I'm roughly 5'11" and hourglass shaped (not sure if that matters). I've been as low as 140 lbs. although that was in college (before twins). Any suggestions on how to figure out a goal would be good.

Why don't you settle in the middle at 165, I mean you are 5'11", and unless you plan on walking the runways, 165-175 would give you good lee-way.

I set my goal weight for 15 lbs higher than what I weighed in my 20s . I prefer a leaner look and I'm comfy at my goal weight. I can see the extra lbs. on me between now and when I was smaller, but at my age, I didn't think the lower weight would look good (I'm 56). My goal weight puts me a little higher than the middle of the normal BMI range.

Goal is extremely personal. Once you get into the overweight BMI range, there are minimal health benefits to being thinner. 150 would put you right in the middle of the normal range. Perhaps it would be good to set your original goal at what your surgeon recommends and your your stretch goal at 150. When you get to the surgeon's recommended weight, you can reevaluate and see if you still want to be 150. If you do, I say go for it!

I am 5'10"...decided on 175 (I can go to WW free when I get there & maintain it for a bit)...the lowest I ever was was 148 (way too small for me, but thought I was still huge back then)....I mostly stayed between 150-155 in high school (felt like a cow)...now 20 plus years later...I am built differently even though I have no children...smallest I have gotten to in past few years is 199...so I am shooting for 175..but will probably go for 165. I don't want to lose my curves or oo-la-la! lol . I want to be able to comfortably fit into a 14. I see myself so much differently now than then...I won't be 100 % satisfied, but I know I will enjoy it if/when I get to 175/165. Best of luck to all of us with our goals!!!

I have posted this table before but you might not have seen it, it takes age into consideration too which most BMI charts don't. Sorry chaps I couldn't find a male equivalent.

Thank you all so much for the information and resources. This has been quite a mind-shift. Normally I'm just happy to lose any weight, now to actually have a target is quite fun.

I like the idea of shooting for my Drs goal and then reevaluating once there. Yes, I hadn't thought about how I might lose my curves if I drop too much, so I'll be considering that too!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
