Sugar and heart palp

Recommended Posts

So I've started low carb (hx of diabetes) and l like it. However for my bday a coworker made a homemade red velvet cake. I had a normal size piece...my heart started racing and about a half hour later I crashed and had to sleep during lunch. No caffeine that morning. Anyone had this? I think that's my body yelling at me.

Could be your body's way of dumping. I have a friend who had RnY and she described similiar symptoms during a dumping episode. I dump with the sleeve but have not had the crash (sleepiness). Normally when I dump I am WIDE awake.

My cousin have the same symptoms then falls to sleep for hours but hers include stomach pain then diarrhea then what you described. I also can't tolerate sugar at all. I get dizziness and have to lay down or sit down for hours before I can function. I couldn't even tolerate premier shakes without having a dumping syndrome.

I talked to my physician about it and he said that sleeved don't dump. He is great and I am so pleased with him but, I do get mild dumping syndrome. My Nut did say some sleeves do have it.

I hear people saying how they can tolerate sweets like before the sleeve, I cannot.

Which the good part is that it stops me in my tracks. There goes my old sugar addiction out the door. Lol

That's funny, I've heard so many things that Drs say sleevers don't do: dump, get hungry, etc. So far I have been hungry and yes I dump. I haven't even wanted to try sugary sweets because I dump with things that are naturally sweet tasting. I can't imagine with real sweets.

I can't even drink crystal light...I got so sick after trying one that I used to think was bitter. Just goes to show that everyone is different.

I am also diabetic. I eat around 30 grams of carbs a day. When I eat something high in carbs my body reacts just like yours. This happen to me before I was sleeved as well.

I get the sweats big time if I eat bad carbs. I stole 5 fries of my dh's plate yesterday and spent about an hour wiping sweat from everywhere. I also shake like I used to when I was hungry pre-sleeve. The sugar crash and sleepiness sounds hyperglycaemic. I used to have this happen too but I haven't eaten anything sugary in the 7 1/2 weeks since my surgery.

I'm eight weeks. I do fine with fruit but bad carbs also make me sweat and really sleepy. I had my gallbladder out too so that could be part of it.

I'm not diabetic, and I get the same sugar/sweets reaction (sleepy, feel terrible, heart races). NO WAY your heart racing that fast is good for you. I figured if I kept eating that sugary crap, I'd end up in the hospital getting some emergency heart surgery.

So I'm off it. For good.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
