msreaina 133 Posted July 18, 2013 Well I know when you are first out of surgery they want you to walk walk walk. So walking will be your friend. Walking will help you in your weight loss journey. I am sure your knees will get better as you lose some weight as well. 1 ProudGrammy reacted to this

eazye 151 Posted July 18, 2013 If you have access to a stationary bike, a digital one with different types of terrain, they work wonders for getting pretty good cardio and being very easy on the knees. I have a torn ACL and arthritis in my left knee and it is pretty pain free for me. And, the more I ride it, the less pain there is doing other activities. If you can do hill programs or something like that on it, as you get more and more stamina and strength built up, you can make it pretty difficult and build some good leg muscles! I dont generally run because of my knee and the bike works great! Now that I have lost the weight, I use a stabilizing knee brace and play softball and have run in a Warrior Dash w/o issues. I may be a litte sore the next day but it is not a limiting pain anymore. You will be shocked at how much losing the weight will make life easier on your bad and good knee! Good luck! 2 DeezJeanz and ProudGrammy reacted to this

ProudGrammy 8,322 Posted July 18, 2013 able to walk will this be enough exercise at first? jody walking is a great exercise - if your knee can do it now - great as time passes you will build your stamina up - you will probably be able to walk further gradually try and do other things ie the exercise bike - everything slowly at first work yourself to a pace that works for you any type of exercise is good for example - lifting hand up to mouth, and then putting hand down good luck with surgery speedy recovery kathy
mark! 449 Posted July 20, 2013 Bikes, ellipticals, swimming are all great things to do that limit the pressure put on the knee.
PGee 318 Posted July 21, 2013 I'm preop with bad knees and can't do a treadmill....but what is GREAT if you have a Y or other gym with a pool is waterfit classes.....I can do anything in the Water because the impact isn't there like it is on a treadmill.....we use foam noodles and barbells for various resistance/weight training. lalyc 17 Posted July 21, 2013 I have trouble with my joints as well. I use the rower at my YMCA. I get a really good workout and I am never sore when I finish. No one else uses them so they are always available.
eazye 151 Posted July 21, 2013 How heavy were you and how much you loose? Thanks for the info. Jodi, I was 317-320 and have lost 130 lbs. With the instability due to the ACL tear and the resulting arthritis, my knee was dabilitating. Now, with the weight gone I do everything I want, including some running, walking 18 holes of golf, etc.... 2 jody521 and DeezJeanz reacted to this
vmamccoy 0 Posted July 24, 2013 I have really bad osteo arthritis in both knees and after surgery was feeling great so started doing stairs and weights... Big mistake for me... Dr gave me cortisone shot and advised to stay away from treadmill and bike.. Do elliptical and/or Water aerobics instead. .. He also said not to do weights where I swing legs too far or push or hyper extend my knee....I wish I could be more active but it is important for me to be able to at least walk...so am following dr advice! deedadumble 1,033 Posted July 24, 2013 I have pretty bad arthritis in both knees and multiple injuries and repairs in my right. I started getting Orthovisc injections 2 years ago and although they hurt like crazy to get them, they have helped tremendously. I also take Megared Joint Care, which has krill oil and hyaluronic acid (same stuff that's in the Orthovisc). I really notice a difference in my pain levels when I don't take it. I've taken glucosamine and chondroitin before and never could tell that it did any good.
