Patti K 98 Posted July 18, 2013 I just looked it up and the partial gastrectomy that is discussed as having a higher liklihood of getting pancreatic cancer is the kind tht is done to relieve peptic ulcers. The stomach is cut differently and the duodenum is affected, unlike vsg. Also, peptic ulcers could ACTUALLY be the causal factor and the surgery's invasiveness could have accelerated the issue. Not related to vsg imho. My bff's mom died f pancreatic cancer and her doctor specifically said it was probably due to her smoking.... 4 Beach Lover, BKLYNgal87, DeezJeanz and 1 other reacted to this
Autumnrain1908 76 Posted July 18, 2013 You know when I first read this that was my first thought. God knows the number of hairs on our head. I believe we came onto this earth with a predetermined date and we will leave with a predetermined date. I am a saved believing christian and I know that God already knew my walk on this earth including this surgery. So I will keep the faith and lose weight with a smile on my face. <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Agreed!!! 1 Beach Lover reacted to this

DeezJeanz 1,065 Posted July 18, 2013 I certainly didnt want to read it either but its gr8 that a question of uncertainty can be asked so that those who are more knowledgeable about it can help answer them. It helps to ease our minds, as well as, steer us towards or lead us to the answer. Thx for ur concern OP and Ty to those who answered. Hope it helped;)
gaijingal 62 Posted July 19, 2013 If it makes you feel any better, obesity has a much stronger correlation with colon and gyne cancers than gastrectomy does with pancreatic cancer. It's one of the reasons I thought it was a reasonable thing to do at my low BMI. Moreover, as many have mentioned, diabetes, heart disease and all the rest that come with obesity can be equally horrific as cancer.
gaijingal 62 Posted July 19, 2013 Not to be pedantic, but to be fair, we all have the exact same risk of death...and it's 100%, no matter how skinny you are! 4 tagster, goirish78, Georgia and 1 other reacted to this

Fiddleman 4,376 Posted July 19, 2013 I'll repeat what is in the essence of the replies above: if we all have the same probability of dying of some natural cause, I would rather live a shorter life full of personal joy rather then a longer life that lacks personal joy and meaning. That is just my opinion coming from a version 1.0 of my life full of misery brought on by head issues and obesity, not to mention comorbidities. Having VSG has not only given me a catalyst to find a meaningful life, but has also helped me enhance the life of others I interact with. Life is short. Choose to live a life full of meaning. We do not know the time and place that our time is up. 3 goirish78, nursepez and DonRodolfo reacted to this
AmyInOrlando 348 Posted July 19, 2013 Consider the co-morbidities you had before surgery, or what your future would have looked like had you not had the surgery. All things considered, I still think the benefits outweigh the risks. Enjoy the new life you have... don't live in fear or regret. LBD 121 Posted July 19, 2013 Trudyjo & Tagster- same story. I will definitely be posing this question to my doctor when I see him in a couple of weeks- can't imagine that it could be the cause. My mother also died two years ago and we have a family history of PC... Exactly what I'm trying to avoid by getting this surgery!
Nicolanz 1,484 Posted July 19, 2013 Obesity and diabetes are also risk factors for pancreatic cancer... damned if you do' date=' damned if you don't.[/quote'] I was going to say this too! 1 Molly3 reacted to this
