Can you change drs after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I made a HUGE mistake. I'm now sitting in the waiting room of my surgeon's office waiting for my post op and hopefully to have my drain removed. The OBand center made the appointment for me last week.

This morning I was so anxious for this appointment, I wore myself out getting dressed, cleaning my wound, hiding the drain, and then getting to the bus. I started not feeling well so instead of my cane, I took my walker. I have to go back a little further - yesterday my drain started to show a little pus around the stitches which is also a reason I so looked forward to this appointment. And yes, I did call when I saw it, but the nurse's response was "Well it's a good thing you're seeing the doctor". I was always advised before that you call for every issue, even if I think it's not a big deal. I felt like an idiot for calling.

Fast forward to now, while I'm sitting in the dr's office an hour past my appointment. When I came in, I said good morning to the woman at the desk, who only side-eyed me before turning away (mind you, I've never been to the surgeon's actual office. I've always gone to the center for all my appointments). I signed in and sat down to wait. My doctor arrived at 10am, but seemed busy with calls. It happens, but after 45minutes past my appointment, I thought I'd check to see when they thought I might be able to see him. I asked, "I had an appointment with Dr Lyass at 10:15. Can you tell me how much longer it may be?" The woman at the desk, the one who side-eyed me, answered, "Talk to her". "Her" was another woman behind the desk. They exchanged words in a language I didn't understand, then "Her" went to get a third woman to speak to me, who I'll call "Three." Now Three is actually decent to me, and tells me

that because the center made the appointment, they didn't put it in the system (wha'?). The doctor will just see me after surgery. Yes, that's what she said. But there's an update, because I take so long to text - I'm not young. His 11am appointment just went in. Yes, before his 10:15. If I didn't have a pus-y tube sticking out of my stomach, I'd leave right now, I'm so angry.

Oh my that is horrible. I would be on the internet searching for another DR. immediately. That does not make any since. I would give the doctor a piece of my mind when he seen me.

You may have to make a little noise. I would most certainly let the Dr. know this is not acceptable and I would start by saying it to the staff behind the desk. Then make sure you follow up with a letter to whoever is in management with the center where you usually go.

Drs have to answer to authority too and the fact that you had to do so much just to get there, outrageous.

Let me say that working in the medical field an actual paper letter will get their attention. I dont think its 100% fair to hold this against your dr. Yes, the front office people suck & hes their boss but their the ones who need the butt kicking not him. Send a letter so the office manager has to respond to it in 14 days. Its like a medical licensing thing at least in my state.

Thank you everybody. I started by telling my center about it and will be writing letters tomorrow. In my anger though I totally forgot

to ask questions about the next phase and where it starts (oops) so ill be taking care of that also (with my center, thank you). I'll keep you posted!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
