I have insurance that covers weight loss surgery. I just found out today that it may require a 6 month diet plan. I am barely able to qualify as of now and I'm afraid I will waist all that time and money and get denied.

How was your experience? Which doctor did you use and are you happy with your results? Also if there's a problem that occurs how do you deal with that? (Where would you go) Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I went to dr. Ponce de leon, Thier team is fantastic. A friend of mine just went to see him and had an equally amazing experience.

Its cheap amd you get better care there than in the states.

I have heard others say they use your initial weight for qualifying you.

That said I used Dr. Aceves in Mexicali. He is a wonderful surgeon and I have zero complaints. I researched Mexico for several months repeatedly changing my mind on the right surgeon.

There are many well reviewed and respected surgeons in Mx but Dr. Aceves was my best fit. He is a more expensive surgeon, at 8750 for VSG, but you recover in a full service hospital with a surgeon who has years upon years of experience.

Good luck in you WLS journey.

cdunn, I used Dr. Fernando Garcia and was/am very pleased with the care I received from him and his team. My surgery was at florence Oasis Hospital which is full service and paid $4700. Two nights in the hospital and 2 nights at the Marriott (which was lovely and made it feel like a mini-vacation). I am also very happy with the coordinating company Ready4Achange.

I hear your concerns about complications and after-care in the US when you get home. There is no easy answer for this. My insurance, Wellmark BC/BS considers self-pay weight loss surgery elective and will not cover complications; the same with plastic surgery (I asked) . It doesn't matter where the surgery takes place. So I got all the tests I could in the months before going to MX: EKG, blood panel, pap smear, chest x-ray, the works. No underlying issues surfaced and that made me feel better. But it was still a leap of faith, I won't lie.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
