Hate my NUT

Recommended Posts

So the cost of my surgery includes 1 year of services with a nutritionist, as many times as I'd like. The problem is they only have 1 NUT on staff, and I don't like her! She's completely unhelpful, she just tells me the same things over & over (get more Protein, avoid carbs, ignore your cravings) but never tells me HOW. Also, she's never had WLS, and has never been overweight. She just does not get it! I've complained to the surgeon, but he thinks she's great.

So...any recommendations for a NUT in the San Jose, CA area that specializes in WLS patients? Preferably one who has overcome obesity in some way as well - it would be nice to work with someone who actually understands our journey.

I'm open to other suggestions also.

Thanks!

I'm on the other coast so I don't have a referral for you. But I didn't like the Nut during my 6 month pre-qual phase. She too was no bigger than a size 2 and never had weight issues. In fact, most of us couldn't stand her because she was so judgemental and rude to those of us seeing her for WLS.

After a while I decided I'd do the best I could and follow all the rules just because she seemed like she was looking for all of us to fail. Some people eventually did leave the process and waited for an opening with another Nut. I was determined to stay the course and not start all over.

In the long run, I actually am glad I had her. It took me months to feel this way. I used my dislike of her to prove her wrong that I couldn't stay the course. The smug look on her face each time I showed up and had followed my plan...priceless!

I'm having the same issue with mine, she's absolutely useless. I complained to my Dr and he's getting me a different one.

Very good, that you have the option. It is very helpful to have a good Nut that you connect with.

I would let your surgeon know that she is dragging his practice down! He doesn't want that kind of review on his business and he will probably talk with her.

Thanks for the suggestions. I complained to my surgeon - his reply? "I think she's great, I haven't had any other complaints." Apparently he doesn't think it's a problem & isn't going to do anything about it.

I decided to just find a NUT on my own, but it's hard to find one that specializes in WLS. I called a bunch yesterday and they either don't want to take a WLS patient, or don't know enough to be helpful (they want you to eat a balanced diet, which means carbs, or they don't understand how you can eat so few calories, etc.)

I really need some help - can anyone refer me to someone? I'm in the San Jose CA/Bay Area.

I posted a huge list of post-op diets from reputable surgeons around the world, in the food and Nutrition section. You couldn't go wrong picking one of those and sticking to it.

Totally agree. You never forget your 1st, so I'll never forget my 1st nut visit. She adjust the collar of her scrubs& said, "I'm just drowning in these Extra small scrubs. " eye roll.

She's never been helpful.no dietary suggestions, just states me down when I mention no-Jo's like oatmeal&fruit (=carbs). Sometimes I have to poop. I know this is really critical but don't they care about making an impact with people? But what should I expect from someone who majored In The food pyramid.

LOL! I should say that to her the next time she gives me stupid advice!

I've had absolutely no luck getting a referral or finding a new NUT on my own who knows about WLS patients. And I don't want to follow a diet on my own - I would really like to work with someone who is knowledgeable. So for now I'll put up with the stick bug until I can find an alternative.

The first surgeon I was going to use (ending up switching due to his long waiting list) said flat out in the seminar...no offense to any Nuts out there but the way you tell Americans to eat is flat out wrong, you're helping keep America fat. When he said that you instantly knew who the Nuts were.

He said do what they tell you to do to qualify. However once you get sent to me, we're doing things my way. I really liked his style!

The point is, they are going to tell you what the standards are and are not going to deviate from it. It is a special Nut that actually understands the true dietary requirements for post-ops. The surgical team I chose has a Nut on their staff, she specializes in bariatric surgery nutrition. She's great!

I'll get voted down for this, but do you really NEED a nutritionist?

Mine didn't do squat for me. I learned more on YouTube and nutrition sites in an hour than I did with my nut in 5 visits.

What nutrition sites did you go to? I would benefit from those sites greatly!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
