Has anyones doctor given them a booklet or package of do's and do not's as far as what to eat or not? Suggestions on Protein Drinks etc? It seems to me that we are really relying on each other(which is a good thing) I'm still waiting on my surgical date, I'm in the 'gathering' stage, sometimes I don't think I know how to properly nagivate through this site. (but I'm working on it!!!

Hi!

My doc gave me a packet of papes with do's and don'ts and you will probably get one too. If you want more info, try the following books:

Lap-Band For Life, The Complete Patient Guide to Success with the Lap-Band by Ariel Ortiz Lagardere MD (I ordered this through yahoo.com)

and

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding by Jessie Ahroni Ph.D,ARNP (this I ordered through Barnes and Noble)

and

Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery by Patt Levine and Michele Bontempo-Saray (also through yahoo.com)

Lots of info out there, but we are all individuals, so you need to do what works best for you.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got a couple of pages from the nutritionist listing post op guidelines.

Now, I know all surgeons are a little different when it comes to post op instructions but here are my doc's:

3-5 Days post op:

liquids only: nothing thicker than thin paint...

broth, Jello,popsicles(sugar-free are best), veg. or fruit juice, skim or 1% milk, ice.

1-4 weeks post op:

Slowly add:

low fat yogurt(no chunks), Tomato Soup, low-fat cream soups(no chunks), pureed or very soft fruit(no skin), sugar-free Carnation instant Breakfast.

4-6 weeks Post-op:

low-fat creamy soups(with soft chunks), fish, chicken, canned meat(tuna, chicken-low-fat, packed in water).

breads, rice, pasta--as tolerated, slowly add tougher meats like pork and beef, fruit, veggies.

Common food problems:

dry meat, shrimp, untoasted or doughy bread, Pasta, rice, seed and skinns of fruits and veggies, dried fruit, fibrous veggies, nuts, coconut, popcorn, greasy or fried foods.

Some Protein drinks he recommends are Slim-fast low carb diet-190 cals, 9 gms fat, 4-6 gms carbs, 20 grms protein--Atkins Advantage--170 cals, 9 gms fat, 4-6 gms carbs, 20 gms protein--EAS advantEdge--100 cals, 3 gms fat, 2-3 gms carbs, 15 gms Protein. I know there are lots of other protein drinks and powders out there though--check the health food stores.

I hope this helps!

My doctor's office provided extensive education classes and materials so we would know exactly what to do to be successful. It does seem that some folks have been left to their own devices. The Lap-band manufacturer website has some information as well...

Thank you for your responses they are quite helpful. I'll keep digging. I found 100 % whey Protein in Target is costs @$15 30 servings 120 calories 2 total fat 1 sugar 23 protein. I think this is good. Is this what I should be looking for?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
