one week post op & feeling hopeless

I COMPLETELY know how that feels!!! I was a mess for weeks 1 & 2. The hunger and feelings of doubt took me D O W N. I cried, was angry and pretty much stayed in my bedroom so I wouldn't contaminate my household with all my negative emotions. What did help me was having at least one friend over per day even if it was only for 30 minutes. The days that I did that, I didn't feel quite as badly. I'm a single mom and although my kids are super supportive and understanding, I needed peer support.

I did an odd thing that helped tremendously and I'm not sure why it worked. On July 4th (10 days post-op), my daughter (16yo) invited several friends over for burgers and sparklers that evening. I grilled the best burgers I've probably ever made that day and served it with Sun chips and freshly sliced watermelon. They thoroughly enjoyed it. Seeing them eat and enjoy something so much gave me a huge amount of pleasure. I did take a small bite of the hamburger patty and chewed on it for a very long time and just spit it into a napkin rather than swallowing it. Gross! I know!!! But I just had to know how they tasted.

I've spent way too much money on shakes that the smell or even thought of them made me nauseous. Isopure got me through a rough patch since it's not thick. It leaves a weird dry feeling in my mouth, but it was better than a shake. A few days ago, I came across a Protein Shake that seems to be the one I can deal with. I had never heard of it before. It's called 52e, vanilla cream. I couldn't stand anymore flavored, fake tasting shakes and had stopped doing them all together. Before that, I mainly drank BioTrust (internet only) since it wasn't laden with so many artificial things in it.

Just know that you're in the "dark period" and you're not alone. It just feels BAD. But coming out the other side of it will make you feel stronger and more in control than ever.

So, go call "your people" and have them come for a visit! Friends are good!

I also had my surgery last week on July 10th. I felt really hopeless yesterday, cried a bit because I haven't had any food for 3 weeks and I was sick of drinking Protein shakes, but today I feel better( Just hoping I got enough nutrition and fluids in). I like the Protein shake I bought , Syntha-6 in chocolate cake batter and vanilla ice cream. Both are good, if you like sweet tasting stuff you may enjoy it. Keep your head up, I am trying to as well with you. My mom had the gastric bypass and she has been with me pushing me each day, and I see how great she looks and feels. My motivation is a healthier me. Good luck to you. The first weeks, i have to assume are the worst.

That's great we are in the same exact boat. I talked to my dietician today, she said what's most important is staying hydrated. Switch it up & get chicken Soup, drink the broth (stay away from can soups) & protein is important but not the main authority. I too cried yesterday for fear that I'm not doing what i had to. I hope things have gotten better for you. I'm assuming all surgeons are different just based on reading this. The surgeon who did my surgery we are allowed cottage cheese, sugar free pudding, saltines, soupy potatoes and oatmeal, etc the second week. Has anyone else heard of this?

Yes, I was on pureed stage as soon as out of the hospital... but I still took it slow...

I was sleeved n July 25 and came home from the hospital today. I am on the liquids stage and i am trying to figure out how am i going to get all this Protein in me. I figured i would have 5 shakes a day, but that will only bring me up to 25 Proteins a day. HOw on earth am i going to get the other 35 proteins in? Does anyone have any suggestion for this. I so look forward to hearing from someone regarding this.

Whatever you are using for Protein has a way too small amount of protein. Look for something with higher protein. Premier has 30g per one serving.

Fh61, very early days so take a deep breath and do what you can to get through the first couple of weeks, which are the hardest.

There are good suggestions in the previous posts for upping your Protein but don't get obsessed. You are only coming up for 3 days out from surgery. Make sure you get your fluids and do ur best with Protein. Your stomach is still swollen and as the swelling goes down, drinking all this liquid gets easier.

I cried all day on day 4 cos I felt I was failing - couldn't get everything in and felt I was spending all day every day either thinking about protein and Water or drinking it, lol. This passes and things do get easier. Three months out, it's an increasingly distant memory and I couldn't be happier...

I agree with just working on gettingmliquids. Im 4 days post op and still struggle to get.enough Water. My surgeon told me.to.focus on liquids this week and the protein can come next week when things go down.

Yeppers, liquids first and Protein next. Unjury is another option @ 20 gm protein.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
