When is your surgery? How long do you have to do the pre-op diet for? Mine was 2 weeks of liquids. I did cheat, around day 5, I had a few tb of Peanut Butter, and a few pieces of deli ham. But I still had 9 days after that to do liquids. I promise the pre-op liquid diet is much harder than the eating after surgery! It was the worst part! As far as your Dr, it depends. Mine didn't care, as long as you lost weight prior to surgery, he didn't care. they didn't even weigh me on the day of surgery! But I have heard of some drs that if you don't lose weight, they will cancel the surgery. Basically its about shrinking your liver. The more fat that is around your liver, the tougher the surgery is to do. So sticking to the diet makes the surgery safer for you, which is what you want. Stick with it, you can do it! I know its hard, but it will be over soon, and the cravings after surgery are gone.

Don't cheat! Your risk of post-op complication may go up. Pre-op diet helps shrink your liver which helps keep it out of the way during the procedure. I start mine tomorrow, but I've been weaning myself into for the past two weeks. I know it may be hard, believe me by the evening I want to eat the whole left side of my fridge but starting tomorrow I know post-op complications are at stake. Lots of luck.

This probably isn't a great thing for me to tell you, but at the time I book my surgery, they were able to get me in 5 days later. I cut back on some things, but I really didn't do much of a pre-op diet. Nothing to eat or drink though past 10pm the night before and I was all good. No complications and am feeling great and will be 3 weeks out tomorrow. I wouldn't recommend doing what I did and I am being a VERY good girl post op :)

I don't know if this depends on your doctor/weight/health or what but my doctor only had me do a 24hr diet pre-op. eating a little after surgery wasn't a big deal because your stomach is so freaking small it takes nothing to fill you up!

I didn't follow my pre op diet at all. I also had a harder first few days after surgery than I thought I would. I'm not saying those two are at all related, just throwing it out there. I'm just words on the Internet though. Keep trucking.

So, with all the answers you can do whatever you want???!!! Try to follow your plan. Your evil addict brain wants you to cheat and you need to fight that battle some day. How about now? Ready for the rude awakening? The sleeve is not magic. You can be sleeved, loose some weight and learn to 'eat around the sleeve' and gain it all back.

PS, most MDs who want a pre surgical liquid fast want it to shrink the liver, which can be important. SOME MDs even put off surgery if you can't follow the pre-op diet.

Good Luck!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
