Found out my Iron and Abumin is low

Recommended Posts

I talked to my surgery scheduler yesterday and she told me that the dietician is suppose to be calling me because i'm low in Iron and albumin. I knew I was anemic in high school but didn't think about it much. She said that I would have to drink two Protein Shakes a day to bring it up and that I had to add an iron suppliment to bring my iron up. Since I haven't spoke to the dietician yet I searched around on the net to see how much iron I should be getting. I found out that a woman 19-50 should be getting 18mg a day (27mg if she's pregnant). It says that you should be taking no more than 45mg per day.

I went to the store and picked up some iron. My bottle read that it was 65mg per tablet. I also picked up a Multivitamin (since I had ran out) and that bottle said that it had 18mg in it. So my dilemma is should I just take the multivitamin or should I hold off and just take the iron by itself since I have to bring my iron up? I know i'll learn more talking to the dietician but I just want to put the question out there. There's no problem with me increasing my shakes because I already have Protein at the house. I just want to bring my levels up so it won't delay my surgery. She said it takes about a month for your numbers to come up and i'll be sent for more labs then. As of now I think it's late September of early October (still have 3 more months of PCP visits for the insurance company).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
