Chest Pain, not heartburn

Recommended Posts

I have been looking all morning for this info and can't find a thing.

I woke up today with weird chest pains. It hurts in the middle of my chest right above my bust. It also hurts all the way to my right shoulder and neck. It hurts to breath or even move my head. It doesn't feel like gas pains did. Last night i ate a burrito, i had some of the tortilla, could it be stuck and causing this much pain? I can feel all liquids going down, and I can drink fine. I dare not try to eat, as i don't want to damage anything. Does this sound like a band problem?

I drank hot tea this morning, i feel it go all the way down. I have only had liquids today just incase something is wrong.

the dr. is on vaca until monday and i have an appoinment then anyway. so i don't have anyone to call about this. I live on a military base and the ER here has no clue what a lapband is, since the military doesn't cover the procedure.

IMO "chest pains" so bad it's uncomfortable to breathe or move warrants a trip to the hospital, whether they're familiar with the band or not. If you're in a car accident I certainly don't think you'd say, "No EMT, please don't examine me, you don't know anything about the lap-band" -- so why do that with chest pains? They're something not to be taken lightly, especially if they're hindering your ability to breathe.

Above your bust is above the band, so unless it's referred I wouldn't guess the two are related. Just a guess. Especially since you woke up with it, as opposed to it setting in during eating. May have done a nerve or muscle thing in your sleep or something. But it doesn't matter, because you should get it checked out professionally anyway.

Just MHO.

Do you still have your gallbladder? If you do, that might be a possibility. I had my gallbladder removed while they did my band and the symptoms you describe are very similar to the pains I had. Burritos can cause an attack. You should have that checked out. My pains were in my chest, my arm right up to my neck and I thought I was having a heart attack. I also had a constant pain in my mid back which always felt like a pulled muscle or something. Let us know what happens. Good Luck.

a gallbladder? yes i still have mine, i have never had any health problems before other than the fattness that plagues me. i'll check that out.

Wheestin- You are so right! what the heck was i thinking. duh. it may have nothing to do with lapband. I guess i was just thinking it must.

I can breathe fine now, it only hurts if i sit up really straight or bend over.

Glad to hear it's not common with the lapband or at least not one of the complications caused by it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
