I have not received a surgery date yet. My date will be contingent upon the psych evaluation by the psychologist. Unfortunately my appointment is not until July 25. I really want to know how long it takes for the psychologist to make his assessment and send the recommendation letter to my surgeon's office?

Here's my slightly unfortunate story:

I started this journey in October of last year and the surgeon's office told me that my insurance required that I had to do six months of weight loss attempts with a primary care physician (PCP), I had to had a recommendation letter from the PCP, two nutrition classes lectured by the resident nutritionist, a cardiac test, an upper GI test, and a psych evaluation by a psychologist or a psychiatrist. Since I had to wait six months anyway because of the PCP weight loss attempts, I decided to take that time to really dig deep and figure out how I got to this weight and how I can make changes to never get back her again, so I decided to work with a psychiatrist and a therapist ( both at the same office and both AWESOME. BTW). Well, I managed to get everything done, I thought....until the patient advocate at the surgeons office sent me an email saying that she received everything that was needed BUT the psychiatrist faxed her and evaluation that consisted of ONE SENTENCE. WTH? So, I called and called the office because the psychiatrist was out of the office for a week and the finally the nurse told me that my psychiatrist does not do psych evaluations for weight loss surgery and that I would have to see a psychologist instead. And now I'm back at square one...lol! My life!!!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
