It was about 5 months out before I could tolerate romaine lettuce. I started iceberg lettuce at about 4 months slowly adding in romaine. After about a month, I cut out iceberg and started adding spinach. That took about a month to eat a spinach salad, then I started adding kale. At just over 6 months out I was able to eat any kind of salad/veggie.

Salads are one of the most difficult things to digest due to their fibrous nature. Of course, everyone is different. Soon, someone will be posting how they were able to eat crushed glass 2 days post-op, no problem. Just because someone can/can't eat something doesn't mean it applies to you. Introduce foods slowly taking single bites and evaluating how you feel after.

I ate crushed glass at...

Not really, that just made me laugh.

I'm 3+ months post-op and haven't tried salad yet. I just don't have room by the time I get my Protein in.

I would check your doctor's instructions... mine didn't allow for fresh veggies of any sort until 7 weeks post-op.

I will be celebrating a year from my surgery next week... and I still can't really eat salad. 1) It really fills me up; 2) doesn't really digest well; 3) hard to eat after eating my Protein. It's still "protein first" for me. That being said, one of the local grocery stores has a salad bar with lots of healthy choices. I'll put in a few pieces of Romaine lettuce and then top this with grilled chicken and/or ham. Then some cheese, peas, shredded carrots, a few sunflower seeds and a little Ranch on the side. It usually costs me about $2.35. This way I'm getting in the important Protein AND a little lettuce. (The extra toppings are super light in amount.. you know, like 5 peas, 10 sunflower kernels, tablespoon of shredded carrots and cheese.)

I literally CRAVE a big salad with Ranch dressing.. basically all of the above, plus croutons. My eyes definitely want to be bigger than my sleeve when it comes to a salad.

tomorrow is my 2 mo anniversary and when i go out to eat, i do eat a salad but i make it a chicken salad and eat primarily the chicken for the Protein and maybe one bite of lettuce... at about 30 days like you are, lettuce gave me the "foamies" and didnt sit well, but like they said in a previous post, its dependent on the person so maybe just try a tiny bite and see how it sits?

I'm about 6 weeks out and haven't tried it yet....still trying to get in Protein. 2 weeks before surgery the doc had me eating everything but chewing very well to practice chewing. I could chew iceberg lettuce ok, but leafy stuff just didn't work to well.

I was cleared all foods at six or seven weeks so I was free to add anything at that point if I was ready. I added salad shortly thereafter.. I started with baby spinach since it's a bit softer.. then i added some leaf lettuces. I was sure to cut my salad up really small.. to almost like eating tabouleh and I didn't have any problems although I found it quite filling.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
