donewithdiabetes 3 Posted July 14, 2013 I'm curious why you went with the sleeve over the bypass. Just trying to make the decision as to which one I want. I do have type 2 diabetes, I read that the bypass is really good for that, however the pouch can stretches which concerns me. Thanks for the input.
jensjoy28 351 Posted July 14, 2013 I liked that there isn't malabsorption, that our digestive tract stays "natural", and that it is "easy" to live with (not something that either bypass or band can say). IMO, the incremental improvement of weight loss that bypass affords over sleeve does not compensate for the additional risks and complications. 3 neneh_vsg, Sydney Susan and Mrs.RRn reacted to this

glostaff 40 Posted July 14, 2013 I had the sleeve because it was a less invasive surgery. My boss had the bypass 6 years ago and she suffers from malabsorption. Plus she still has a lot of weight to loss and her eating doesn't seem to be as restrictive as those with with sleeve.
RAAinNH 113 Posted July 14, 2013 Sleeve surgery will also help you with Type II Diabetes a long as you eat properly and avoid high sugar & high carb foods. Unlike the Bypass, the Sleeve has fewer instances of dumping syndrome. if you choose the Sleeve you will need to monitor sugar & carbs. My Glucose levels have been normal since I started my pre op diet. Discuss this in detail with your doctor to help you make the best decision for yourself. Good Luck! Allan Cameron 98 Posted July 14, 2013 While I had not yet gotten diabetes, my tests showed I was on the edge, just went it for my first round of post surgery follow-ups and still don't have any blood work back, but the high blood pressure has already turned so my Doc is having to adjust the meds, I hope the blood work will show similar improvements in other areas as well. I really have to worry about my Kidney, as I had to have one removed last year due to Cancer... Not looking for the sleeve to be any kind of silver bullet, but I needed to do something and this seems to really be working. Lost more weight in a month than I did in two decades of dieting and exercise. 1 Melixxa reacted to this
Ms skinniness 3,003 Posted July 14, 2013 I choose the sleeve because it was less invasive and the thought of malabsorption is really horrible. I also know that you can stretch the pouch. But over all, you can gain weight back with the bypass or the sleeve. It depends on what you chose to eat. The surgery is on the stomach and not the brain. I am diabetic and my blood sugars are within normal ranges too.......

Macy6 356 Posted July 15, 2013 You know I went in wanting RnY. I was quite surprised when my surgeon said that he recommended the sleeve for me. His main points were that if I had walked in a year ago that he would have been RnY all the way, he said in the last year he has seen how well the Sleeve is working and due to my lack of co morbidities (I do have sleep apnea.... dx in March) my age and not being diabetic he thought it would be appropriate. He was highly against the lap band, said a majority of his surgeries the past year have been revisions. He also talked about how with my age, that if 30-40 years down the road I was putting weight on, that I could be revised to a RnY. Than I found this great forum and read a lot of literature and was just thrilled with what I was reading.
GypsyQueen 198 Posted July 15, 2013 My initial reaction when I went to the information seminar was "Why would anyone choose anything but the sleeve?" It just sounded so much more straight forward and required much less long term post op follow up. It suited me. Just go with what feels right for you. PGee 318 Posted July 15, 2013 The whole rerouting bothered me some (and for some reason, removing 85% of my stomach doesn't [?]).......my sister has RNY, and due to the malabsorption issue, she is in a clinic weekly or biweekly getting nutrients by IV.....since our genetics are so close, I decided to go with the sleeve......on the upside, her diabetes was reversed with the RNY.....
