"Accidental Awareness" - my biggest fear right now...

Recommended Posts

Not sure why (since I had band surgery 4 yrs ago and didn't think twice about it) but my major fear for my revision on Tues is waking up in the middle of surgery. Apparently they give you 2 drugs during surgery. One to stop your muscles from moving and one to actually knock your brain out. When that one doesn't work, you're awake during the whole thing, but unable to alert anyone cuz your muscles aren't working.

I know this is rare, but I'm terrified of this all of a sudden. I've had about 6 other surgeries in my life and never even thought about it. now I'm terrified of going under. About 10 yrs ago, I had right foot surgery. They gave me a spinal that deadened the lower half of my body and did the 2 hr surgery wide awake. Why can't they do the same thing?

It's probly the stupidest question today - especially coming from a nurse (haven't worked as a nurse in over 10 yrs however, so I can plead ignorance!).

Anyone else have silly fears going into this?

I actually had the exact same fear. Was the only thing about the surgery that worried me. I am a pharmacist and had full faith in the medical team and the medications. I am 12 days post op and remember meeting the team in the operating room. I laid down on the table, put my arms out, and I think I was told they were putting something in my IV. (I was out!). You will be fine and well asleep during the surgery and will wake up in recovery sleeved!!

I have the same fear. I've never had surgery tho. A few years ago, they came out with a horror movie about this. I'm typically a horror movie (particularly the tacky :-) ) junkie, but I absolutely refused to watch it with my friends because it is such a big fear of mine.

It's so very rare that its silly to be scared of... Kind of like being hit by lightning... You will do great on Tuesday! As you are going in just think of all the reasons you are doing this. I wish you luck!! :-D

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
