Whole Foods: what are your must- haves?

Recommended Posts

I've NEVER been to a Whole Foods in my life, but I'll be shopping there later this week. I'm 1 month out and can tolerate most foods, so far. I'm sure it's going to be a little overwhelming, so I plan to make a little grocery list before I go... I need a little help.

What are your must-haves from Whole Foods??

I insist that all of my dairy and meat products are organic. I stock up on eggs, cheese, yogurt and chicken breasts. They also have a wide variety of good Soups and meatless chili that is tasty.

I haven't tried chili yet, and meatless chili sounds pretty good!! Thanks!

My regular grocery store has a nice selection of organics so I don't really get much at whole foods other than spagetti squash (my grocer doesn't always have it) and some Soups.< /p>

If you have a super target, check out their organics.

FYI not all produce at whole foods is organic

Not only do we not have a Super Target, I've never seen one! Lol.

And this trek to While Foods is an hour away... So that may give you an idea of what's available to me in my area. Lol

I absolutely love Whole Foods and drive 45 minutes to get to it. You can get a lot of the products there in most grocery stores. But I still go there because they have a lot of products that I love to get there. Mainly meat, seafood, spices, some dairy because you can get organic usually in the grocery store. But they have an extensive list of them. They have fantastic Soups there as well!

I've only been there maybe 2 times. Most of what you find there you can find at Kroger for half the price. It might save you a long trip and money if you check out your local grocery stores organic sections. It is fun to check it out though.

There's no "Kroger" either. Lol

Our local grocery store has about 1/4 an aisle of organic food. Lol. I buy what I can there, but its pretty limited -- so you can understand my excitment for Whole Foods.

What's the grocery store near you? Do you have publix?

Your local grocer should have organic cheese, dairy, and eggs and maybe som limited produce.

I would definitely get spagetti squash, Gia Russo spagetti sauce (publix sells it but your local grocer may not) in Hot Sicilian or Tomato basil, check out their quinoa grain mixes, fresh greens like arugula, kale, etc.

Take your time, read labels for serving size, calories, Protein, carbs and fat since not all things there are healthy but have packaging that seems healthy.

I am lucky (so I feel your pain) because I have super target, whole foods, publix and Fresh Market all a few miles away.

Just to give clarity, the town that I'm from is in the marsh of south Louisiana. If I pointed to it on a map, it would be Water. ;)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
