When can you "try" steak?

Recommended Posts

I am onnnnly 3 weeks post of and let me say this first:

I AM IN NOOOOO WAY TRYING TO EAT STEAK ANNNNNYTIME SOON!!

I have just seen varying "timeframes" on when you can eat/try it again..... I know that red meat stays in your stomach ( regular stomachs) for days.....

But,i was just wondering what others doctors recommend? I've seen some say their doc said 3 months.... while mine said 6 months..... And if some can "try it" after 3 months ( and we both have the sleeve...), would it be bad if I did? Seems like docs just have "personal preferences"....

Thoughts?

Right after my 4 week postop check she said I could eat whatever I felt comfortable with so I went straight to chilies and ordered a petite steak I only had like 3 bites but I would be cautious

I am 5 weeks post op and I had tried a lot of different foods but steak is to scary for me right now. I just don't think my stomach is ready for that one yet. This is a bummer because I absolutely love steak. If you try it in the near future let me know how it went. :)

At five weeks post-op I was on a "regular" diet and could start eating anything I wanted. I've had red meat several times this past week, including steak, with no problems- just a few bites, but it did not feel like it got stuck in my stomach or make me feel too full. But, I am very careful to eat very slowly (I use a timer and take one bite every five minutes), and chew extremely well.

I think I tried it about week 6 - when I was allowed solid foods. Steak is actually easier on my stomach than chicken breast - go figure???? But it wasn't a big amount of steak - probably 3 or 5 small bites.

At 6 weeks, I was only eating about 4oz per meal. I just remember how chicken almost immediately made my stomach grumble and steak didn't.

Cleared for lean beef at 6 weeks. Haven't tried it yet though.

My Dr. says 6 months so I'll probably wait even though I am a steak lover. Same thing for pork chops or loin. Luckily, fish, chicken and shellfish are all going down easily so I'll stick with those for now. I'm 6 weeks post op today.

U r right, every doc has their "personal preferences" so it can seem odd that some of us can eat things earlier than others. But he or she also knows our personal medical histories so if ur doc says six months, that's when u should start trying red meat irrespective of what others are doing. Would it be bad if u ate it earlier - who knows? But why go against ur doc?

Same here about tolerating steak sooner than chicken. I don't see why steak would take so long to digest vs other meats - I don't think that is true. It might just feel that way for you?

Steak stays in your stomach for days? Nothing stays in your stomach for days.

I started eating anything and everything at 4 weeks, after clearance from my doctor. I've no issues with anything. Just take small bites and chew well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
