Starting the Search and Shopping for a Surgeon

Recommended Posts

Hi all! This is my first post as I am just going on my first informational seminar this Saturday. It is a weight loss clinic that mainly promotes Lap bands, but also has bi-pass and the Vertical Sleeve as services offered. The VS surgeons that i am mostly interested in were booked (or I was booked) until August for seminars, so I decided to go check this first place out even though I'm not feeling it with them.

Any tips or insights I should consider when attending these seminars? I haven't received a referral from my PCP or my Endo, though both have suggested I consider WLS in the past 2 years (as I had lamented about weightloss and diet upon diet that i could not make work; the d/g of hashimotos hypothyroidism two years ago hasn't helped either!) So i don't think there will be resistance on that front. But I do wonder if it is better for insurance to have the Endo or the PCP be my contact doc for the surgeon?

so much to think about and i am very excited about the VS! I really feel that this is the best choice for me after doing much reading and thought about the options.

Thank you in advance for your input!

First off August isn't that far away! I would wait and go to the group that you feel more confidence with.. I also would talk to your pcp about recommendations. I chose my surgeon because my pcp had experience with him (she had several patients use him) and I trust her.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
