Three Years Later - What I've Learned

Recommended Posts

Awesome post! I'm still in the pre-op phase and am trying to make sure my head is "right" before having surgery. We all hear what we are and are not supposed to do post-surgery. My nutritionist plays a video on why you should not *drink* with meals. Has been really helpful visually as I am trying to do behavior modifications now so that post surgery it may lessen how many behaviors I need to change. Anyway, I thought this would apply nicely in this thread. Here's a linky:

I too can see how easy it would be to gain the weight back , i am almost 5 months out. lost 62 lbs , and am struggling.. this post was a helpful reminder to not drink with my meals and the waiting 30 minutes to drink is long forgotten about.. so today , i start back at week 4 , setting the timer for 30 minutes after a meal , and coming on this board for support.. just reading this board does help , yesterday was my worst day of eating since surgery , i had kays Protein Cereal , which is awesome by the way... then the topping off one piece of pizza.. then a few meat balls, and for the first time since surgery , i ate a small piece of cheesecake.. i also had some italian icees. i kicked myself all day yesterday for doing this.. today , i feel much better , i am back on track , i have ate my 120 calorie cereal , and 3 small meatballs and coffee.. i feel back in control today , but still terrified of gaining it all back some day

I think alot of us share the fear of going back to the way things were. Your post really shows how easy it can be. The surgery is really a kick start and does make the initial loss easier. I hope I can keep it up for the rest of my life!

Everything you said is so true. It will be two years next month since wls and I wish someone would have posted this information back then. I also go on all liquids if I gain more than 10lbs and it truly works.

Ill have to remember this. I think the important thing is to remember is the work never ends, and establishing good habits early on (first 6 months) is essential in long term outcome. None of us will ever be one of those skinny people who dont even have to think about it.

I want to know how you stay on all liquids if you gain more than 10 lb back. What do you drink? Where do you get the willpower?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
