Sneezing followng eating?

Recommended Posts

Yes, I too do the same thing! :) I believe it has something to do with the vagus nerve. I will sneeze, burp or get a runny nose. Never the same thing twice! :)

When I hit a certain point in my meal I get heavy hiccups. Never had it pre-sleeve but now I know to step away from the plate immediately;-)

I am 1 year post sleeve and I too have the sneezing problem after eating. It’s not really a problem, just annoying. I asked my surgeon about it and he said that it’s common.

I thought I read a post some time ago about someone having sneezing attacks after eating just a little too much but could not find it through a search. Anyway, at the time I thought they were nuts.
Fast forward to being nearly 6 months post op (back in February) and I am able to eat anything I want. I noticed, and it is recognized by my wife and coworkers as well, that when I slightly over eat solid/heavy foods like chicken, I will get a sneezing attack. I know, you think I am crazy but I can tell before I sneeze that I have eaten a little too much because it is a pressure point that I can feel. It is almost like a switch that tells me "Hey idiot, stop eating".... I know the attack is coming and it results in about 10-20 sneezes unless I can move around enough to allow the food to settle differently.
It is the craziest thing and I was so skeptical of the other poster who said that it happened to them, at least until it happened to me. It is now a tell tale sign that I ate just a little too much and it pushes on a pressure point that triggers it. I am almost 1 year out and I now have a built in "full meter" with my sneezing attacks.
Anyone else experience this?

Not yet but wouldn’t that be something! I already sneeze back to back to back when I do so not sure anybody would notice if I started doing this because my body’s telling me it’s full! [emoji12]

Okay, sooooo, this is totally a thing.

I have this thing called sun sneezing. Basically, walking from inside to outside can cause me to sneeze. This is a legit thing which you can look up. But for overeating, try Snatiation

BEFORE surgery I use to sneeze when I was hungry. Id start to feel sick, sorta like car sickness. Then I'd get the need to sneeze, and after I did the sickness would go away. Now after surgery I don't get hungry to a point that causes that sick feeling. Instead, I get it after my first bite of food when hungry. And yup, it makes me sneeze!

So, I did some research and turns out it's all related. There's a lot of people who sneeze when hungry or after eating. It's all just nerves being stimulated.

You can google a bit and you'll find a lot of people talking about their different triggers. It's really interesting!

It's the phrenic nerve - the same nerve responsible for the left shoulder pain caused after surgery. When you're full (from food or the CO2 used during surgery to inflate your abdomen) it pressed on this nerves and causes the pain, sneezing, running nose, hiccups, deep breath, etc.

I get all of them when I'm full. First I give a big sigh which is totally out of my control. Then it's sneezing, hiccups, and a running nose. All signs that if I take one more bite, I'm in for a bad time.

I know this posting was years ago. But yes. I had my surgery in 2014 and noticed right away of the sneezing fits. I tried to explain it to my family but they too thought I was crazy and just laugh at my funny sneezing attacks that I love to over exaggerate even more just to make them laugh! Anyway, now 3 years later I FINALLY search for other people with the same issue. So happy to find proof of this.

I had explained to my husband that it happens when I'm too full. Then I suddenly get a stuffed up nose, then the sneezing begins. Once I sneeze, then I have air to burp. Then I feel the food going down. Then I get to finish that one tiny bite that's still left on my plate. Never fails, just ONE bite left.

Thanks for your posting!

Sassy Jenn

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
