It's not that I hate protein shakes

Recommended Posts

Although I do hate them. They are sickening sweet to me. I muddle through them anyway because i have to. My problem with them is that since I have started drinking them I am STARVING all the time. I was never a Breakfast person. I usually never ate before 5-6 pm (too much obviously). I was ok with that. I was rarely hungry before dinner time. Now I wake up starving. After I drink my shake I'm actually more hungry. Its a hunger that makes me feel nauseated. I hold off as long as I can and eat a Protein Bar. It helps a little for a little while. That continues all day until I can eat my lean/ green meal. After that I'm ok until I wake up the next day.

I haven't read of anyone else going through this. Am I alone? Please tell me that after surgery this will not occur.

I found the pre-made shakes to be too sweet for me. I finally tried Pure Protein brand chocolate frosty powder and never looked back. I add some PB2 powder or some sugar free Torani Syrup and I'm set. Post Op I had to switch to Smart Balance milk, I guess I became lactose intolerant, but all is good now. Hopefully after surgery that hunger will subside. I applaud your willingness to stay the course even though its a struggle.

Good luck on the home stretch!! Keep us posted on your surgery.

I've been drinking BA Advantage and Unjury. Both are powdered that I mix with unsweetened almond milk.

I think part of it is that your body is adjusting to a new pattern. Not eating anything until 5-6 is very hard on the body, it thinks its starving. Your body is now getting nutrients at a time when it's in starvation mode and probably is adjusting. Try to get on a schedule to feed it something every few hours. Even if it's only half a shake or bar. I actually split up my lean and green into two meals. One at lunch and one at dinner on my pre op so it would get on a regular schedule.

When you are post op, it will be important to eat every few hours. After week one, I made it a point to have some Soup at regular times so my body would adjust to my new normal. It helped as I transitioned to soft foods and on to my new eating plan.

You are doing great, keep it up. You will be so glad you did!

Try unflavored Protein and add sugar free syrups and skim milk so that you can choose your own sweetness level. You could also use unflavored Protein in warm (NOT hot) broth for a savory option - just make sure the liquid is below 140° F. before you add the protein or you end up with a bit of a nasty mess.

Newat52, I hadn't thought of that. Sounds reasonable.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
