So I started my pre-op Opti-Fast diet on Monday. Monday and Tuesday were okay, difficult but I did better than I thought I'd do. Yesterday was really difficult and I broke down with a few scoops of dry roasted peanuts then today I did the same damn thing. I knew this was going to be a struggle but, geez.. Didn't think it would be this hard. This is harder than it was for me to quit smoking! I think part of my problem is the whole issue with not having anything solid to chew. Opitfast does offer Protein Bars but I bought them in 3 different flavors and they were all terrible.. The shakes are okay so I just exchanged them for more shakes.. So basically I'm on only liquids and that is TOUGH. Anybody else cheat with peanuts or something that is high in Protein rather than something sugary? I'm just concerned it's going to affect my surgery. I feel like the biggest dingbat right now lol. Ugh.

This may not be much consolation but post op you are going to have a period of liquid only - this is good practice!

Seriously, hang in there, don't lose the place over a few handfuls of nuts. Just don't repeat it today, tomorrow or any day between now and surgery. You aren't cheating, you are just making things a bit more difficult for yourself when you don't need to.

Start tomorrow with a clean slate, put this behind you and good luck. Nothing about this surgery is easy but, 11 weeks out, let me tell you it will be worth all the hassle you are going through now :-)

I'm so happy I was allowed to actually eat real, albeit limited, foods on my preop diet and not live off shakes. I had a shake with every meal but that was accompanied with food. Kudos to you because it isn't easy at that point in time. High in Protein is good ... it's the high in fat part that they don't want because they want the liver to shrink. I was allowed certain snack foods so since yours is stricter you are probably fine. What they told me was that I actually had to lose weight on the preop diet. If I didn't lose then I didn't get my surgery.

Post op is also all liquid diet but it actually filled me up and I didn't feel hungry so I found post op to be much easier than preop.

Don't beat yourself up over it. Do your best! Good luck!

Thanks guys. I was doing some googling on the subject and I don't feel too bad after reading what some people cheat on.. Some person said they at BK like nearly every day up until the week of surgery. Makes my half a jar of peanuts sound pretty okay. :) lol It's funny too.. I'm not a peanut fan but when I saw that can of peanuts it was like all of a sudden they were the best thing in the world and I just had to have them.. It's a bad day when some peanuts sound like a filet mignon. lol.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
