Pre-op diet differences...

Recommended Posts

Some of you may remember that I had gone thru one hospital's bariatric program but then was disillusioned when I went to meet the surgeon because the clinic attached to the hospital was filthy? Anyway, I switched to another hospital program about 20 miles away & the differences have been amazing!

Just for the pre-op diet alone, the "dirty hospital" required a pre-op 2 week liquid diet. The current hospital program I'm going thru requires a 2 week pre-op Protein Shakes + 1 meal diet. It even allows me to have 1 fruit, as well as unlimited veggies all day long if I'm hungry! Yahhoooo!!!! I think I picked the best hospital program to go thru! Even tho I get to eat dinner, I still have lost 8 lbs in 7 days. Probably those who are on only liquids lose more in a week but I have another 5 days to go till surgery so I will lose a bit more before then.

Another difference is the "dirty hospital" allowed you to drink store bought Protein shakes like Premier Protein, etc..but my current hospital program requires you to drink their shakes, which can be costly. I had told them I already purchased a case of Premier Protein from costco & they said I can have one of those per day along with their shakes the rest of Meal Replacements.

Also, for the post-op part of it, the "dirty hospital" required (I believe) 1 week Clear Liquids but the current hospital does full liquids post op. I'm just really amazed at the differences between 2 hospitals/doctors only miles apart! I would have never known the difference if I had stuck with one hospital.

Just thought I'd share what I've learned in the differences in two local surgeons & hospitals here in the Detroit area.

Yes but I am always Leary of any place that pushes their own Protein Drinks. Premiere Protein from costco is a great source. What makes the hospital shakes so much better? The $ it brings in! Also, I had a one week clear liquid diet post op and I think it was the best thing for me. Full liquids would have been way to heavy that first week. I have had nausea only once when I ate too fast and didn't chew well. No vomiting at all! I'm 3 months post op.

Of course they want to make money. WLS is basically a money maker for hospitals anyway. I am also using Premiere Protein. They want you to use their shakes pre-op....but post-op they had no problem with Protein drinks from other sources, as long as you meet your Protein goal.

I was wondering if full liquids would be too much at first. The first day I'll be on clear liquids but after that I can go to full. I will be sitting on the fence to see which I can tolerate the best the first few days.

Congrats on your weight loss! Looks like you're doing great for being 3 months out!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
