Consequences of no protein

Recommended Posts

To be honest I am not meeting my Protein goals. Not even close. Maybe at around 30-40 grams a day. But the weight is coming off slow, like 1-2 pounds a week, so I just try to eat healthy and don't worry about the protein lacking. Am I hurting myself? Would the weight lost be faster? I'm scared to eat more! Why do we need so much protein? Would love your advice, explanation, personal experiences. Thanks :)

not enough Protein and you will loose your hair, and lose muscle Not FAT...Protein is VERY important.....add a shake with Medical grade Protein once a day to add good protein that is well absorbed, there is A Big difference in the kind you drink...Good Luck, and remember it is NOT just about Weight Loss it is about being Healthy also!!

You need to get more protien in. 40gm is not enough for a healthy body. Get in an extra protien shake every day. You weight loss will probably speed up.

If you don't get enough Protein intake your body has to break down muscle tissue to get what it needs to fuction. As you lose muscle mass it will actually decrease your bodies ability to burn fat therefore decreasing weight loss, as well as making you have no energy. That's why they say protein is the most important thing post op. Good Luck.

Your nut should have given you a range to target. Like everyone else said Protein is very important. I have increased my protein and Water and the weight is falling off and I am healthy that is really what you want so please dont worry about gaining. Eat protein, drink water and exercise this is the new life style that you have now. If we are honest fear is what got us all in this situation in the first place so why hold on to it. New day, new life new YOU good luck

I am 4 months out...I have the same problem because I detest the shakes...there are consequences...you won't lose as much or as quickly. You will not feel as well or have as much energy. You will lose hair regardless if you get the Protein or not. I am trying to get more in by food, but I just can't eat a lot, so it is a struggle. Just hang in there & keep trying. Best of luck to you!

I love the shakes thank God. I always feel like I have given my body a gift after I drink one. I get all my Protein in-- up 100 grams per day. But still losing hair. :(

I think with rapid weight loss - hormones go crazy- and do all kinds of things with your body.

My surgery was March 25' date=' 2013. I've lost 40 lbs so far. 60 lbs more to go ideally.[/quote']

Sounds like you're doing good but the increased Protein will help in all the ways people have mentioned:)

No advice but I can tell you my personal experience. There hasn't been one single day since surgery nearly 5 months ago that I have gotten the recommended Protein or Water. I do lose slowly but I'm happy with it. It's slow and fairly steady. I was very tired initially but feel great now. I don't count grams or calories and will admit that some days I do not eat the good things that I should.

The good news is that other than losing slowly, I have no consequences. I am healthy, happy, and have not lost one strand of hair. I don't know why but I'm not complaining.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
