I'll be visiting my PCP soon, and I want to know what kind of lab work did you guys have post- op. My surgeon won't be following these things, so I want to be sure I don't miss anything.

I'll be having my yearly thyroid level checked, but other than that, what should I suggest?

Thanks you guys!

:)

Good question. I was wondering if mine would do lab work as well since they did a ton (on 2 separate occasions) pre surgery and while I was in the hospital. They were even checking my blood sugar levels in the hospital although I'm not diabetic.

Surgeon runs all blood work every 3 months. Mostly all Vitamin levels plus CBC and things PCP usually runs. The vit levels were never checked by my PCP. This is how I found out I was anemic the last time.

That's why I want to make sure my PCP orders everything I need. I love my doctor, but I know she's not a specialist in wls. I don't want to miss something like that.

Since I self-paid I have my PCM run vitamins/minerals - it's especially important to check your Bs & D as well as your Iron and Calcium. I also got my A1c run again, but I was diabetic prior to surgery (not anymore!) and had my hormone panel run as well as my thyroid panel.

The main concern would be your Vitamins because I put off my labs until shortly after one year post op. I was seriously deficient in B12 and Iron and those two supplements changed my life. I went from feeling like a zombie to functioning like a normal person again.

I just had my post op labs done on Monday and had 6 different ones that they needed. Just an FYI, though. Ask if you have to fast or not. I assumed that I had to fast for them because they were listed under fasting labs, so I woke up Monday morning, went and got labs done. Girl said, "I have 2 more." Once she said that, my body ran cold and when she was done, all I saw was black spots. I had to sit there for a while, then ended up lying down on their bed. I was never like this before, so I figured when I had "all" of my stomach, it never bothered me. Just wanted to give you a heads up because that was NOT fun at all! Good luck!

Am glad that you shared your RX with us - I don't expect my PCP to know alot about weight loss surgery - since i'm having surgery in Mexico - my PCP is taking care of me post-op.

Kaiser Fremont Bariatrics recommends the following labs at 6 mo., 1 year and then annually:

They also recommend annual bone density screening.

I got mine done at 3 months post op and my order was identical to MrsRrn. Got the results back and everything was in normal range except B6 which was high. Will find out what that means at my appt in 2 weeks. I think my doc will order them again at 6 months.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
