Dumping Syndrome Horror Story

Recommended Posts

I have symptoms like this and I can't always attribute it to eating something I'm not supposed to. One day it happened after I ate 1/2 a piece of string cheese. What happens to me: I get terrrible gas pains/cramps and it feels like I need to go to the bathroom. But nothing happens - that lasts sometimes 20 mintues and it's so uncomfortable. Then I go and it's aweful - diarhea' date=' terrible smelling gas and so much pain! And I'm usually on the toilet for 1/2 hour to an hour. Sometimes I'm back in the bathroom every half hour for a while.

I'm 2 months post op and I also had my gallbladder removed at 3 weeks post op. I was thinking this symptoms from having my gallbladder removed, but maybe it's dumping?[/quote']

sounds like what happened to me post gall bladder removal. its cause your digestion is running too fast... the gall bladder stores the bile. nowhere to store it now. you eat fat, triggers your liver to make bile, but instead of going into the gall bladder, it flows right into your intestines. which them makes you run to the bathroom. acupuncture can help balance you out. it helped me. or if its severe, there are medicines you can take that slow the flow of bile. track it and be sure to talk with your doc about it. and look for a good acupuncturist.

Interesting topic for me right now.

So, let's just politely say that diarrhea has NOT been an issue for me post-surgery. In fact, most days, I'd welcome a bit of it. :) My old self? Oh, all the time. 3, 4, 5 times a week.

Today, however, is a pretty bad day in the plumbing department, and the second time since January 8 that I'm dealing with it. The first day was about a month or so ago, and I never could figure out what prompted or correlated/caused it.

Today, though, I'm wondering if it's 'dumping,' which I was told by my doc's office is not really something you deal with much on the sleeve. So, what did I eat in the last day? Well, normal Protein Breakfast, lunch, snack, etc. today.

Yesterday, though, I was down at the beach and was 'making do' with New England beach fare. Ended up the day within my calorie range, counting a ton of exercise (run in the AM, 2.5-mile kayak in the afternoon), but ate a lot of garbage. "A lot" is relative, of course, but it wasn't my normal day.

Today, not feeling great. Correlation? Causation? That's my guess, given that it's only the second day since January 8 that's been like this, and by far my worst day 'off the wagon' yesterday.

Yep! Garbage in... Garbage out!

I've had an upset stomach twice in all of my months both times eating something greasy and bad for me while out.

Moral of the story? Don't eat crap.

Don't know if this will help anyone. I have not been sleeved yet. But I was diagnosed with IBS about 20 years ago. I went on a diet to get rid of carbohydrate addiction. It included omitting all grains as well as dairy. All of my IBS symptoms went away. After doing a challenge, I have been diagnosed as gluten intolerant. It has been absolutely life-changing.

I have heard from many people that they become intolerant to lactase or gluten after their sleeve. It may be that a mild intolerance becomes larger after the surgery

I didn't think that you got dumping with the sleeve? This is good to know because I don't

need to eat bad stuff anyway and if this happened to me I definitely wouldn't do it again.

You do not get dumping DUE to the sleeve.

Any time you switch up your diet and eat too much sugar, fat, or in my case DAIRY (due to lactose intolerance) you can experience dumping. It can happen pre-sleeve as well, especially if you go haywire on junk after being on a strict diet for a while.

dumping means the food moves from the stomach to the intestines too quickly. it can happen without the sleeve. but it doesnt have to be junk food. any food, ep any food with sugar or fat, can cause dumping syndrome. i have a friend who has this naturally and she can get sick on any food if eaten too fast or in too big quanities.

I think I had a bit of this naturally too. I've always had IBS issues before surgery, but now it seems that this has be magnified by 50! I also think some of mine problems are because my gallbladder was removed.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
