Has Anyone Managed To Keep Surgery Completely Private?

Recommended Posts

Telling NOONE except my husband and my mother. I told my mom to tell my dad but that I didnt want to talk about it. She said he was very upset and wanted her to convince me not to do it. Which is the reason I dont want to tell anyone. I dont want to hear bad stories of someones sisters cousins step brother who had it done and blah blah blah. I feel that it is my decision that I thought long and hard about and noone elses. I do however feel like I am being deceptive. With all the pre-op appointments people were noticing something was going on. I just dont want to have the conversation about it with anyone, And I certainly dont want people to know that I weigh enough to qualify for weight loss surgery...: ) Maybe after I lose most of the weight I will share with others, but for now its my business..

There was a lady in my nutrition class who was not telling her husband. The only people who knew were her best friend and her best friends husband who were both sleeved. I can't imagine keeping it from my husband!

I told only my husband, 3 close friends & my hr rep. I swore all to secrecy and they've been very supportive. No one in my family knows. Because I don't have much to lose, it hasn't been too drastic. I didn't want the stresses of folks judging or trying to talk me out of it. Nor did I want them to know that my weight & health qualified my for WLS. My family & other folks ask how I've lost weight & I tell them through healthier eating and exercise. They seem to have bought it & now asking me for advice & pointers.

Yeah, I managed for about a month! Ha! Only my husband and daughter (well, bestie too) knew. But my other childhood friend flat out asked me after going to lunch one day since I could only eat about a spoonful. When I got a couple months out, I quit worrying about it. When people would ask how I was losing, I'd say "Portion control!" Which IS true. Good luck, All! 3 years out - and 100 pounds lighter. You're gonna love it!

I initially started out only telling my hubby. Once I got approved I told my 3 lifelong girlfriends and also my siblings. They were all really really supportive.

Little by little and as I got more comfortable with my decision I started telling more and more people. I think i was almost ashamed and embarrassed that it came to having surgery that I wanted no one to know.

But now that I see what a change it has made in my life I wanted to share my story with others.

Last week I through it all out on fb. Letting everyone know my reasons for doing it, how I felt about it, how scared I was doing it and scared what would happen if I didn't do it.

I finally hit a point where I want my story to help others find the help that they might need to get healthy.

Not sure if that helps you at all. PM if you have questions.;-)

I told EVERYONE. I am kind of making ut my mission to inform people on the surgery and how we arent taking the "lazy" route... I hate that there is such a bad rep for those of us making this huge decision. :-)

I've told my close family members, my b/f, his parents and five people at work that I am good friends with. My bff has is already planned out that when I can have solid foods, we're going to lunch, she's going to order the food and I'm going to eat my two bites off her plate! :-) She has been really supportive, more than the b/f has!

It is a personal decision and you have to decide what is best for you and no one else!

Funny, when I go out to dinner with my BFF i often eat from her plate instead of ordering.. She is so supportive, it's unbelievable. Went to Miami with her & a few other friends at 6 mon post op. They were trying to get a list of alcohol to get from the wine & spirits store, before I could say anything, she jumped right in for me & told them not to get the strong stuff that I used to drink. Awesome having a supportive friend.

I started out telling only my very close friends and immediate family, but ended up telling some of my work colleagues too. One of the co-workers has a really big mouth, and seems to be talking about it with other people. At first I was bothered by that, but I decided that I wasn't going to stress out about what I had no control over.... I agree with folks that it isn't anyone's business, but have made peace with the fact that some people are going to ask and know. Now that my surgery is done I'm not as worried about people telling me what a bad idea it is since it is fait accompli.

You're NOT a fast loser? 82 lbs in a year is pretty good' date=' I think!![/quote']

Your right, 82lb is good I just did not express it right. I lost my weight constantly during the year and there was someone at work on WW losing too and my weight loss was about the same rate as hers so I did not stand out.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
