Ok so my surgery is tomorrow and I had Tomato Soup for supper last night, and cream of broccoli today for lunch. I'm wondering if these are ok for pre op "full liquid" diets. I was told by my surgeon to do full liquids a week before surgery, on the list are things like popsicles, Jello, slim fast, Protein Shakes, broth, but also says "1 can 98% fat free cream Soup such as cream of mushroom cream of chicken etc., mixed with 1 can Water and 1/4 cup nonfat dry milk powder." I don't have milk powder and haven't found it anywhere so I've just been doing soup and water. Do you think that's ok for liquid? I'm ENJOYING the soup so it's easy for me to follow. After surgery I have one week of Clear Liquids then 1 week of this full liquid again so it'd be good if I can continue this because its easy to enjoy!!!

Also, do liquid diets cause diarrhea? I've had horrible diarrhea since having my gallbladder out in April but now it's still happening after doing the liquid diet so I'm wondering if its the diet causing it now or if my gallbladder surgery is still the cause!!

I did tons of "cream of ___" Soups in my post-op full liquids stage. Note: cream of chicken with a scoop of Unjury's chicken Soup flavored Protein powder is awesome, and a great way to bump up the protein!

Regarding the diarrhea, if you're not taking in much solid food or Fiber...seems justified :)

I don't know why the doctor wants to make it so complicated.. water+fat free milk powder=fat free milk... so why wouldn't you be able to use fat free milk???

So you think I should just make it with 1 can of Soup plus 1 can of fat free milk? And no Water? I think maybe the milk powder was supposed to be giving me Protein? Cause she wrote next to it 12g Protein. So maybe the fat free milk will give me a bit of protein too? I'm drinking protein and shakes and stuff so I don't see why I can't skip some protein in my soup!!

Does yogurt count as a liquid?

The addition of the dry milk is to pump up the Protein intake without giving you more ounces to drink. Good luck with your surgery tomorrow! Remember Post Op to strain your Soups until you are on mushies. I agree about the Unjury chicken Soup. it was a great way to add protein and was yummy.

Full liquids mean just that....if it can go through a colander then it can go in your mouth ;) good luck tomorrow! :)

I get that , but you'd add the powder to MILK in order to pump up the protein.. adding 1/3 cup powdered milk to Water gives the same amount of protein as a cup of milk so she might as well just use milk to begin with... So if you wanted to pump up the protein you'd need to add the powdered milk to skim milk, not to Water. Adding 1/3 cup of skim milk to a cup of milk gives you 16 grams of protein.. if you used only 1/4 cup of powdered milk and added it to a cup of skim milk, you'd wind up with 13 grams of protein... around the same count that the doctor wrote down.

Soooo.... No? Lol yogurt can be SQUISHED through a colander lol. I'm just having a hard time drinking those nasty drinks and can't afford the unflavored Protein just yet so I'm wondering if I could eat some Greek yogurt to help.

I agree with your logic on this.. I was answering her question about omitting the powered milk and just using water. I was typing it out while she posted the next question and missed it.

I was gunna mention the same exact thing! You'd think that would be the equivalent. I've never even bought powdered milk and no one has every suggested it to me. I mix all my "cream of _____" Soups with 1% milk. Skim reminds me too much of breast milk. It's see-thru!

Never mind my previous post. Didn't even read all the comments before I posted. I've got to start doing that!

If you can pour it through a strainer, then it should be fine. At least, that's what my NUT says. Also, there are some tasty drinkable yogurts out there that will pour through a strainer with no problem. You might try one of those?

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
