Hello All! I'm 31 years old and just embarking in the journey. No surgery date yet but really nervous and excited about everything. I'm diabetic and I'm looking forward to reversing the disease soon! What pushed me to this point is my grandmother recently was diagnosed with renal failure (due to diabetes!) and they gave her a few years to live. i don't want that to ever happen to me. my doctor is part of the NYU weight loss center. Anyone else have surgery there? I have another appt on Wednesday and maybe we will pick a surgery date then (yay)! I need some help making a list of questions to ask.......what do you guys suggest? Thank you in advance!

Welcome. I didn't have surgery at NYC but did at Westchester Medical Center. Your in luck because the hospital is a center of excellence.

You should ask some of the following questions:

How many surgeries has the surgeon performed with your specific procedure?

What is his/her success rate?

What will the pre and post-op diet consist of?

What should you changes in your body should you expect post-op?

What should your weight be once you reach goal?

What should you expect in the first weeks/months post-op?

How long will you need to stay in the hospital?

How much pain should you expect post-op?

These are a few but I'm sure you will think of many more.

If you are not squeamish, you should go to YouTube to watch video of the actual procedure. There are also videos of people who've had the surgeon performed which you should watch.

Good luck on you journey and come back to the forum often. You will get a lot of support as well as tough love from the posters but we all mean well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
