Tired of Being Tired - When Does it Get Better?

Recommended Posts

I'm 12 or 13 weeks post-op. I lost count. I'm so tired all the time with no energy. Is this normal? I assume so, due to the lack of calories I'm intaking (typically <700) compared to what I did pre-op. Anything I can do to get my energy back? I take b-12, b-complex, and all the vites I'm supposed to.

Tired of feeling tired all the time!

I haven't had my Iron or any levels checked. I need to do that.

I get in between 70 and 90g of protein a day, and 80 to 100 oz of Water.

I would definitely get your levels checked. I was having that same fatigue problem preop and I turned out to be low Iron. 2 days of iron supplement made an unbelievable difference.

Great job on the Water and protein! Yep Iron would be my next guess.

Noticed you're in Dallas. Lots of great support groups in our area, I highly recommend if you aren't involved already.

Your lack of energy might also be related to lack of carbohydrates. Are you eating low carb? Low carb, in my opinion, is 20-30 carbs a day. It is a bit of a catch 22 because low carb diets usually yield very good weight loss results because your body is in ketosis, but it also leaves you quite tired. This is how I ate for the first 5 months. Your energy should come back when you increase calories and carbs. I want to echo don's question also: are you eating enough Protein? Lack of adequate protein will leave you tired. Try and eat as much protein as you can and when the time is right, introduce good carbs back into your diet. You might consider energy squares from nuts.com as these are little bursts of good carbs and fats to give you desired energy. I like chocolate paradise the most.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
