Will I ever eat a hot meal again?

Recommended Posts

I know it's early, I'm only 4 weeks out, but am getting so bored with my food options. I've tried to do fish, but it gets cold waaaay before I am even close to be done with it. Everything I eat then has been cold - tuna salad, turkey, chicken, etc.

So, to all you vets out there who have been at this for a while, do you get to a point where you can eat a little quicker and actually enjoy a warm meal?

I'm in the same bout as you- five weeks out and I end up reheating my meals 2-3 times to keep it hot. Or I just eat it cold if I'm feeling lazy.

I haven't asked myself that question since my kids were little!! I think i'll just be happy if I can tolerate what i'm eating.

You will. Don;t Worry!

One thing I did was heated up my smaller dishes before I added my food to it.

Instead of using a dinner plate I use a dessert plate warm it in the oven or microwave.

Makes it last a little longer.

I eat at a pretty quick rate. I am use to eating cold food and don't mind it being cold. I do need to slow down bc I have to watch my dining partner eat and I a little impatient ! Lol

I read where someone uses an electric cup warmer and they put their plate on that. Obviously that can only be used at work or home...unless you want to whip it out on the table at a restaurant and ask the waiter where the outlet is??

I eat fairly quickly and I'm 4 months out.. I take a smaller bite than I used to and chew my food very well but I don't wait between bites. My meals don't get cold.

Thanks all. That's good to know that I won't be destined to a life of cold meals! ;)

I'm 7 months out & when I eat the way I am supposed to (chewing thoroughly & eating over a 20 minute period like my NUT recommends) my food always ends up cold.

I purchased one of those plates right after surgery. It does work pretty well. Very heavy and expensive for one plate, but you do get a good 30 minutes of warm food.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
