Worried I will fail and need Bypass

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have been overweight pretty much my whole life-and need to lose about 170 lbs. Since I went for my first appointment and met with the NUT I have lost about 20-25 lbs in 1 1/2 months. My surgery is not until August-my husband is having surgery this month (he is having the bypass). I am so worried that I will fail at this like I have with everything else before this, that I am afraid I will need the bypass and then that makes me wonder if I should just get that and not get the Sleeve. I am wondering if anyone else has felt that same way-that they will fail and not lose the weight.

It is my biggest fear but the bypass just wasn't a good option for me so I went with the sleeve. People fail at the bypass too. There is no fail-proof weight loss surgery. You still have to deal with whatever it is that makes you want to over eat. You still have to work at it. It's not a magic bullet.

pre-surgery weight 325; surgery date 2/28/2013; surgery weight 307; 8 weeks past-op weight 281.4; 12 weeks post-op 274; 4 month post-op 266.2

I had the same fears and even considered getting the Duodenal switch but I wanted to give this a try. I've never been thin in my entire life.. I was well into the 200s by the time I was in highschool and my highest weight was 360 pounds and a 60BMI. My GOAL WEIGHT of 150 is the same weight that I weighed in FIFTH GRADE!

I've failed SO MANY TIMES with tons of diets. This time really is different I'm not losing as fast as I would have if I had had the DS or RNY, but I AM losing and I'm not suffering with hunger and deprivation. I think you'll do GREAT because you've done great so far just in your preop phase.. so enough with the negative self talk and and go Celebrate your 25 pounds lost!

i started with lapband in 7/10 and just got the sleeve 5/24/13. ive lost almost 25 lbs in 7 weeks without trying very hard. i too am scared ill fail because i pretty much failed with the band. but as long as you get to a healthier weight its not supposed to matter right? from everything ive heard about the sleeve its practically a miracle. i think you will do just fine :)

Not a miracle - merely a tool.

You will be successful! ^_^

I can say this, bc I also started out with 170+ lbs to lose, & in the last 3 months, my sleeve has not ALLOWED me to cheat/fail. Physically, I mean. Plain & simple, only a little bit goes in. And when you put yourself on an eating schedule, with that new tiny tummy, & follow your NUTs/Drs guidelines, YOU *WILL* be a success story, too! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
