Please tell me I'm not alone....

Recommended Posts

I know I've posted that I was nervous before, but I'm really scared.....

I don't know why the nerves are kicking in now, I've had four major operations before and of course been put to sleep each time...

I just don't know why I can't shake this scared, nervous feeling I'm having lately!!!!

Anyone else like this before surgery, I'm exactly one month away today.... 8/8/13!

Kim

You are not alone. I was a newbie to surgery until VSG. I was in denial right up to being wheeled into the OR. I kept telling myself that I could just get up and walk out anytime I wanted.

At least you are a surgery vet! :-) And I wouldn't use the phrase, "put to sleep." - too many negative connotations.

:-P

I was ready to run out the door up until they wheeled me away. Many people go through this, it is natural to be afraid. You need to be sure of what you're doing, so educate and be confident of your decision, whatever that may be. Best of luck!

Totally normal! Not only because you are having a major surgery that requires anesthesia, but you are having it voluntarily! I think that gives you the little extra hesitation because you start to think that you can stop this any time you want. Only we can't. We got this far in the process for a reason.

Good luck to you and I know you'll be fine. August 8th is a great day.....it's my birthday!

Hi Kim,

Like you I had several operations when I was younger (child actually) and I began feeling quite nervous heading up to my surgery date (which really didn't make much sense as I never had a bad experience before).

I had to work so hard to get this surgery, jumped through tons of hoops, and kept getting ins denial. I finally became terribly immobile due to arthritis and joint pain and my hubby and I decided that private pay was necessary for my health and well being. After securing the finances, doctor and surgery date I became nervous but left with the choice of declining mobility (despite months of physical therapy) or facing my fear, I chose to grin and bare it. Best choice I've ever made!

Hope it helps just to know you are not alone with these fears. You alone though can weigh the options and make the best choice for you. What will your life look like if you don't go forward? What are the possible improvements that this surgery will bring to you?

I go back and forth with my emotions. I'm having surgery 8/03 and it still feels a little surreal. I have a pain in my side and I think 'oh no my appendix is bad'. Then I think maybe I might get a cold right before my surgery date. Or a hurricane will come. Then I think..,, it goes on and on lol. Maybe I'm just nervous because I want this and think that something is gonna mess it up. I've had surgeries before too but it's still scary each time. You're not alone! But, we can and will do this and it's going to be great!

I believe almost everyone goes through these feelings when they are leading up to the surgery and not just about the surgery itself but about the thought that you are choosing to change your whole life and wandering if you are really ready for it. Just focus on the reasons you decided to have the surgery and good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
