Need help increasing calories

Recommended Posts

This seems so crazy to me but I need help increasing my daily caloric intake. Currently, I mainly able to get about 700 calories a day -- which I realize is starving my body & of course I'm not losing any weight. But I'm eating at every meal-- granted small amounts ( but it's all I can eat), getting 50-70 g of Protein .. Fluid intake is a little under (48-56 oz) a day

I'm not hungry but know that I need to eat more

Any advice?!?!??!?!

How far out are you? I ate around 800 calories per day when I was less than 6 months out.

Please provide a typical days meals.

At 4 weeks out 700 calories should not be a problem. You do need to try to do more Water in my opinion, I have always tried to do a minimum of 60 oz a day and currently get about 120 oz but I am at 7 months. I personally eat between 700 and 900 calories a day and have consistent weight loss having lost 134 lbs in 7 months. You should also note that a lot of people have a stall around the 1 month point so it could just be your body adjusting. Good Luck.

I'm 6 weeks out and only get in 400-500 calories a day. I meet with my nutritionist on Thursday so I should have a better idea how much I really need to get in. Oh people are right about the stall I was in one for about 3 weeks and just broke it a couple days ago by loosing 5lbs. However during that stall I went down in a pant size so there was still a lost just not on the scale.< /p>

I am almost 4 months out, and still only eating between 500 and 600 calories a day. When I saw the Dr last month, she said that was fine. I wouldn't worry about going beyond 700 calories yet - check with your Dr. because every Dr. is different in their "plan."

It gets easier as time passes. I use 30 oz bottles and I started with drinking 2 of them a day then was able to get 3 and now 4.

When I was in first few months of post op and trying to get it all in, I made sugarfree pudding and mixed in Protein powder. I would add a scoop or two of Protein Powder and blend it for a couple of seconds and then add the pudding. Getting the Protein from the skim milk and the powder really helped me get those calories and protein up to where it should be.

Good luck, it will get better each week. :)

P.S. also try to get in more fluids, you are a bit short on that. ;)

I am 3 months out today and my doc has me at 1500 calories a day? Does this seem high considering what all of you are at?

I'm only 5 weeks out and just starting to hit 600 calories. 1500 seems very high as that's what I was eating prior to surgery (even though it was less healthy). I'm sure my Dietition said in 12 months I'd be eating about 1000 calories a day. But you have to follow what they say so I'd probably discuss with them and see what they say

That is pretty crazy to eat 1500 calories a day at 3 months. Most are 600-900 past the 6 month mark. Not saying it can not be done, but, wow, that would be hard.

I'm 4 months out and I've been eating 800-1050 calories a day since 6 weeks. I've NEVER had a problem getting in MORE calories.. I'm pretty sure I could get in 2,000 calories a day if I wanted to. 2T of Peanut Butter = 190 calories.

Oh, I see. Yes, I suppose if you chose certain foods low in nutritional density you could do it. Good point about the Peanut Butter. When I made that comment, I was thinking more about lean Protein, like chicken, and veggies, like broccoli. That would be hard to hit 1500 on that type of food, right? For grins, throw in 1-2 Protein shakes. Still hard.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
