Newbie in Phase 2 needing help/opinions...please?!?

Recommended Posts

Kind of long post but I’m curious as to what ya’ll think so I am looking for opinions please.

I was sleeved on 7/2 & home on 7/3. My Dr has 4 food phases:

Phase 1 - Clear liquid first 4-7 days after surgery

Phase 2 - Full Liquid Protein weeks 2 & 3 (full/cloudy liquids)

Phase 3 - pureed Protein weeks 4 & 5 (blenderized/baby food)

Phase 4 - Soft protein week 6 (easy to chew baby bites)

On day 4 I moved to phase 2 and had fat free milk mixed with my protein and for dinner probably a ½ a can of bean with bacon Soup put through the blender and added a scoop up unflavored protein. Took me 2 separate sittings to eat most of it but I did.

Today day 5 I had my Protein Drink with FF milk and for dinner had ¼ C light ragu pizza sauce mixed with ¼ C low-fat ricotta cheese and ate most of it, maybe 10 bites left.

With all of the “new” foods/flavors/textures being added back in I’ve been doing very well, not getting sick no issues.

Here’s my question or my issue I’m pondering… if I’m in phase 2, full/cloudy liquids, does that mean I should only have cloudy thin soupy stuff or can I have thicker Soups, cream of wheat, ricotta/pizza sauce, applesauce mushy thinner type stuff.

I’m not trying to hurry the process but I’m just curious to see what people think a “cloudy liquid” is. Obviously if I eat something that makes me sick, hurt or anything like that I WILL NOT be eating that for a long time.

The only examples my post surgery book gives me is strained fat free cream soups.

HELP?!?!?

I couldn't have that thicker stuff until week 3. My surgeon said it had to run off a spoon easily.

Our stage 2 includes applesauce, cream of wheat, an egg, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. But very small quantities. Weeks 1-2 are liquid only with 3-4 tablespoons of food, relying mainly on Protein Shakes for nutrients, but exercising your pouch with very small amounts of food. Also, we were told to stop as soon as you feel full, even if it's only 1 TBL. So I don't think you need to feel like you are forcing yourself to finish the food. I am still pre-op, but have been required to make meal plans for the 3 stages after surgery. Do you have a dietician you could work with to come up with some meal plans? I hope this helps. Best of luck! :)

Amy

I think I'm going to stick with the cream of Soups and Protein Drinks until my post op appointment on Thursday. This is an AMAZINGLY helpful site but there are so many variations in the phases between Dr's. Thanks for the help ladies!

For my plan I'm on the liquidy Soup full liquids until my preop appt Wednesday. I'm having liquidified potato soup, cream of broccoli soup, and blenderized bean bacon soup. I'm sick of it already but my printed out schedule has cream of wheat, thin oatmeal, soft cheeses, lowfat yogurt at stage 3. Its best to follow what your doctor tells you.

My doc said if it fits thru your strainer - its liquid. I had a strainer with a pretty open grid... LOL so I had slightly thicker stuff then some- but never had issues - and I did run everything thru my tea strainer- the kind you hold over the cup as you pour. I blended everything and added liquid til it did fit thru that strainer! LOL

Well I can't wait to make it to the pureed stage. More options.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
